From Our Director
As we ushered in Chanukah, we
noticed that it wasn't only the chanukiot
that were shining brightly. It was the faces of our parents enjoying a
one on one experience with their children! I loved watching the joy
and love permeating every room. The children will always remember this
special time shared with you and how important you made them feel.
However busy your lives are, you made the time for them! Thank you for
making the experience so special. Enjoy the pictures of our fun filled
days!
This week we hosted Kulanu children
in our Yeshiva.
It is never too early to practice Mitzvot.
Our yeladim graciously shared their
toys, Morot, and friends with
children from Kulanu. These children got to experience a
yeshiva setting during a very exciting week.
Our children were so kind and reached out to make new friends. We love
practicing the mitzvot of
Hachnasat Orchim, kindness "bein
adam l'chavero",
and sharing. All our families can be very proud of the wonderful ways
our children interacted with others.
We were so excited to have Rabbi Klammer come to help us make our
Siyum. Each grade, 3s, 4s, and Kindergarteners, had their own
special time with Rabbi Klammer. He helped us remember all the stories
from Bereishit to
Vayechi! Each class had a turn to lead the others in
Parsha related songs! Thank you Rabbi Klammer for always
inspiring us and coming to enrich our learning! We had special
Torah shaped cookies for our Siyum!
Yummy!
Enjoy our pictures! Shabbat
Shalom!

Parent Teacher Conferences |
It
was great to see so many parents on Tuesday night, December 8, at our parent
teacher conference night. One of the hallmarks of our educational philosophy is
having you, the parents, as our partners. We value your input and enjoy sharing
anecdotes about your children's day at school with you. May we all
continue to see much nachat from all of
our children.

Chanukah Music Chagigot |
During the week of Chanukah our
music teachers, Morah Karen and
Morah Tzila, led festive music
Chagigot for the children in the SKA gym. Each grade had the
opportunity to go across the street for music instead of having regular
music in their classrooms. The children sang and danced to their favorite
Chanukah songs. You can see from their faces what an exciting and fun
time they had.

Hosting Guests In
Our Classrooms
|
During
the week of December 28th, we were privileged to be able to perform the
mitzvah of hachnasat orchim.
Some of our nursery and kindergarten classes had the opportunity to host a
guest in their class for a few days. Our guests usually attend schools that
best meet their special needs. Having them be part of our program helps all
children appreciate unique individual differences. The
Lev Chana children and their guests gained and grew from their
experience together. We would like to thank
Kulanu for coordinating this special program. We would also like to
thank the SKA students who participated in this
mitzvah with us by serving as shadows for our guests.

Art From The Heart of Lev Chana |
Winter has arrived and the windows of the preschool reflect the change of
season. The four year nursery children created a lightweight "string thing"
sculpture. The children soaked white yarn in glue and formed interesting
snowflakes. As the glue dried, it hardened forming great snowflakes which
were used to decorate our hallway windows. Similar to real snowflakes, no two
are alike.
The four year nursery children were introduced to cubism as an art term. The
artist Piet Mondrian painted geometric designs that did not have a particular
subject or even a name. Mondrian worked hard to find the right placement of
lines to create squares and rectangles making the simplest form of cubism
possible. His most famous paintings are made up of straight lines and simple
colors. We examined Mondrian's "Broadway Boogie Woogie" and noticed how that
cubism painting represents Manhattan. The children learned how to create their
own cubism paintings by cutting strips of painter's tape. They learned how to
place the tape to make closed boxes. Then they filled in their shapes with
paint. When the paint dried the painter's tape was peeled away revealing
beautiful cubism paintings similar to the artist's.
The kindergarten children were introduced to the modern art of Andy Warhol and
Pablo Picasso. Andy Warhol is famous for his repeat portraiture while Pablo
Picasso is famous for cubism.
Prior to starting the projects, the children drew likenesses of themselves.
Using their "self portraits", the children replicated the works of these
artists. Their original self portraits were reduced and copied. They learned
about the term "repeat portraits" which was one of Andy Warhol's favorites. When
their copies were distributed for use in the project, the children were
instructed to color in their drawings using different colors for each picture.
The results were fantastic!
The following week, the children learned about Pablo Picasso and cubism. Once
again the children used their self portraits. They learned that the term cubism
is derived from the word cube, referring to squares. They also learned that the
basic facial features can be broken down into square shapes. They noticed that
Picasso painted the features facing various different directions. When he
painted, Picasso placed those features together like a puzzle or a broken
mirror. The children colored in their self portraits. Then they cut them into
squares and reassembled the puzzle mixing up some of the pieces. The results
were amazing and silly Picasso-like images.

Upcoming Trip to Hewlett Woodmere Library |
The four year old nursery and the kindergarten classes are looking forward
to visiting the Hewlett-Woodmere library next month. They will receive a
tour of the library and hear stories read to them. From our past library
trips we know that they will also see a film of a story book! The
kindergarten children will be able to use their library cards to take home a
book of their own choosing. We hope that this experience will lead to many
more trips to the library and a love for reading books! Please take
advantage of this library to spend reading time and special time with your
children.

Children's Author Visits Lev Chanaisits
|
On Monday, December 28th, the kindergarteners were treated to a
special visit from the famous children's author, Dina Rosenfeld. She
presented many of her books of which we already had quite a number
in our library. She spoke about the process of how to write and
publish a book starting with an idea, notes, and drawings. She
showed us the original designs of her first book,
The Very Best Place for a Penny and
Peanut Butter and Jelly for
Shabbos. She read the book,
Peanut Butter and Jelly for
Shabbos. She discussed how much hard work goes into
writing and publishing a book and how many people (editors,
illustrators, and publishers) are involved in accomplishing that
goal. She ended with showing the children,
Kind Little Rivka published in many different languages,
including Braille. We thoroughly enjoyed her visit and can't wait to
read ALL of her books!

Chanukah Workshops |
Our Chanukah workshops were a great success, as usual. Parents and
children truly enjoyed their time together. It is always very meaningful for
children to be able to spend quality time with some of the most important
people in their lives. The children and their guests collaborated on various
art projects in a relaxed and pressure free environment. The children also
had the opportunity to share some of what they learned about Chanukah
with their parents through stories and songs. A wonderful time was had by
all!
