From our Director

Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year at Lev Chana.  New beginnings!  Fresh haircuts, new shoes, new Morot, and most importantly, new friends!  We're off and running to a wonderful start!  Our school is abuzz with all the exciting things happening here.  (no pun intended!).  We prepared for Rosh Hashana by learning all about the role bees play in our lives.  Then we learned what happens to our "Shana Tova" cards after we put them in the mail.  As you look through our pictures, you can see the joy of learning and discovery shining on our beautiful faces!
The yeladim love getting visits from Rabbi Klammer.  They are thrilled to say "my friend, Rabbi Klammer!"  Each and every child feels as if they have their own personal relationship with him!  We love the visits!
Lev Chana is the place to forge new friendships.  Our children learn how to negotiate the terrain of social and emotional growth, while exploring new and familiar surroundings.  Whether in the classroom or playground, we practice our skills of conflict resolution and practice using our very savvy social skills!  As we usher in the Jewish new year, 5769, we wish for all a year of good health, happiness, and nachat from our families!

Gmar Chatimah Tovah!

Learning About the Chagim

yomh

This year's lunar calendar gave us the opportunity to delve into our holiday learning for the first few weeks of school. Here at Lev Chana the children learn about the chagim in a multisensory way. As you have read in the teachers' newsletters, each class has been busy singing, crafting, tasting, smelling, reading and discussing the various aspects of each chag. Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah have been the themes permeating our walls and halls! While the topics and discussions have been similar in all of the grades, each one has been enhanced with developmentally appropriate activities allowing all of the children to internalize the messages of this special time of year. We are sure that our in depth holiday explorations will serve as a springboard for more rich and exciting learning as the year goes on. We hope you enjoy sharing with your children what they have learned!

Dancing With the Honeybees

Mr. Cliff Sunflower, a beekeeper from Pennsylvania, came to visit us!  First he involved us in an interactive presentation complete with props, all about bees on the farm and how they make honey.  Then the yeladim experienced a hands-on workshop where they could try on the beekeeper's clothing and see a real bee and wasp hive.  But the best part was seeing a real working beehive (under glass, of course!) and watching the bees move in and out of the honeycomb!    Thank you so much to Women's League for sponsoring this wonderful program.  Women's League is always ready to enhance our curriculum in any way!  We are so grateful!
We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a sweet, happy, and healthy New Year!  May your year be filled with "nachat" from all our children!

     Visits With Rabbi Klammer

The children at Lev Chana look forward to visits from Rabbi Klammer! Every Thursday Rabbi Klammer joins us at Lev Chana for singing, storytelling, and interacting with the children. Every week a different grade gathers in our backroom for a pre Shabbat Oneg. Rabbi Klammer plays games with the children and always shares a meaningful story or lesson with them. You can see from our picture galleries how much they both enjoy their time together.

Art From The Heart of Lev Chana

Here at Lev Chana, we have a unique art program designed for the 4 year nursery and the kindergarten children. Throughout the course of the school year, the children will be introduced to many modern artists. They will learn about techniques and the use of different media. As a culmination to our program the school hosts a night at Lev Chana's Museum featuring the works of our own "modern artists". Also, the kindergarten children will visit the Museum Of Modern Art. It's a wonderful trip and a highlight we look forward to.
In preparation for חג הסוכות, the 4 year nursery children made their very own original hanging decorations. They colored with permanent marker and stuck wikki sticks (wax coated wicks) onto a sheet of transparency film which was then folded to protect their work.
The kindergarteners' hanging sculptures were prepared by looping beaded pipe cleaners through punch foil for that added  shimmer.
The children were encouraged to do their own work to the best of their abilities. They are all pleased with their accomplishments and will be so proud to see their decoration hanging.
Have a wonderful  חג and a שנה טובה.

Kindergarten Trips to the Post Office

Is there a better way to mail Shana Tova cards than to actually go to the post office to mail them? Not for our kindergarten children! Each kindergarten class had the opportunity to go to the Cedarhurst Post Office to mail their Shana Tova cards and to learn more about the postal system. The children gain a wealth of information about the mail that they see in their homes daily when they visit the post office. They heard from the postal workers about the process of receiving and sending mail. They took a tour of the post office and watched a video about it, too. The trip gave the children the opportunity to have a hands-on experience with something that they will encounter for the rest of their lives!

Morah Betty and Morah Lisa Read to the Children

One of the most important goals during the early childhood years is to immerse the children in a rich literacy environment. At Lev Chana we do that in many ways. One of the ways is to have guest readers read to the children. On or around Rosh Chodesh each month, Morah Betty and Morah Lisa visit the classrooms and read a book to the children. This month since we were not in school on Rosh Chodesh, which was on Rosh Hashanah,
our special book reading took place the week before. The children always enjoy hearing stories and Morah Betty and Morah Lisa enjoy interacting with the children and getting to know them. We look forward to more.
