Parshat Shemini
Shabbat Begins 6:57 pm

From our Director

Mishenichnas Adar Marbim Besimcha!  We certainly took that to heart!  The month of Adar was filled with fun and mitzvot!  Our kindergarten yeladim brought their sweet voices and yummy hamantashen to the residents of the Woodmere Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.  Everyone enjoyed their singing and delightful company!  Topsy Turvy Day had everyone giggling as they looked at their friends and Morot, inside out, upside down, and even backwards!  As a special treat, we were privileged to have Ben Cohen, the magician come to give us two shows, one for our 3's and 4's and one for kindergarten.  Ben, the magician, began with an optical illusion and explained to the children what that was.  It was wonderful how he explained to them that a magician's tricks are illusions and that magicians don't hold any special powers, only Hashem does!  Mr. Cohen even showed the yeladim one of his tricks!  A picture is worth 1,000 words, as you'll see as you peruse our galleries!  I hope you enjoyed every real and embellished version you heard of the Purim story!

Shabbat Shalom!

Kindergarten Children Visit Woodmere Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center

The kindergarten children had the opportunity to perform the mitzvah of bikur cholim when they visited a local nursing home. They came adorned with hand crafted crowns and sang Purim songs to Morah Tzila's musical accompaniment. They brought some cheer and happiness to the residents. One woman said "This is the nicest thing I've ever seen!" Some classes brought some of their homemade hamantashen to share as well. The children left feeling proud that they were able to make others happy.

Purim Comes Alive At Lev Chana!

It has been quite an exciting month here at Lev Chana. The children have been immersed in learning about Purim! One of the highlights of pre-Purim preparations is changing dramatic play areas into Shushan. Many classes painted and created Achashverosh's palace in their rooms fully equipped with crowns, royal capes, scepters, and thrones. As the children learned the story of the megillah they were able to act it out during playtime throughout the day. Children retain story information well when given the opportunity to actually be a part of it. When it came time to write their megillot, the children knew so many details of the story. Of course they had a lot of fun along the way, too. The children at Lev Chana are certainly associating learning about chagim with fun and enjoyment.

Topsy Turvy Day

On Monday, March 10, Adar Bet was ushered in with Topsy Turvy Day at Lev Chana. Many children got into the spirit of the month with unique and silly attire. Some children were hesitant at first, but slowly joined the fun by turning their shirts backwards or their kippot inside out. A great time was had by all.

Magician Visits Lev Chana!

On Wednesday, March 19, the children were treated to a truly funny and entertaining magic show performed by Ben Cohen. The children were all in costume and were mesmerized by the magician's fascinating tricks and jokes. Mr. Cohen performed for our nurseries and then again for our kindergartens. He certainly put the children in a happy Purim mood. We would like to thank Women's League for sponsoring this exciting event.

"Mazal Adar Dagim"
For Rosh Chodesh Adar the four year nursery children filled a make believe fish tank with fish they drew themselves. It's so funny seeing how the fish "swim" without water.
Shushan Town has invaded our preschool hallways. As we know, Shushan is also known as Persia. This month the preschool children learned about patterns by exploring Persian art to celebrate the Purim Holiday. As in Persian rugs, the children learned that patterns follow through the entire art work. The four year old nursery children collaborated and wove a communal rug. The kindergarten children drew patterns on black paper, which were then used as covers for their Megillot.
To add to the Purim festivities, "Harleqiun Seated in a Café" by Pablo Picasso was introduced to the preschool children. Each child drew his or her own harlequin or white faced clown. The children all had a great time drawing silly faces for Purim.
The kindergarten children know all about the different characters in the Megillah. They had the most fun playing "dress up" by decorating photos of themselves as the character of their choice.

Teacher In Service Day

On Friday, March 7, the Lev Chana faculty enjoyed a stimulating and inspiring workshop from Rebbetzin Hilla Goldvicht. Rebbetzin Goldvicht infused the teachers with many  ideas of how to appropriately implement Hebrew language in our preschool classrooms. She shared the results of research on how children learn a second language and then helped us apply it to our classrooms. Everyone came away with new ideas and games to use with the children.
