From our Director
Preschool is all about stepping stones and learning sequentially from one area
and level to the next. At the conclusion of our "Ani" unit, in which the yeladim
learned all about themselves, we delved into health and nutrition.
The health and nutrition unit led us into a visit to the fruit store, which of
course led us all into our Brachot unit! Enjoy this bird's eye view into how
much we love learning and doing!
After
a very unique visit from the planetarium, astronauts from the planet
Earth-Kindergarten went exploring throughout Lev Chana. Check out our pictures
to see what we did!
All
our yeladim know that Rosh Chodesh is a special day. Something fun will always
happen. To celebrate Rosh Chodesh Adar I, Rachayl Davis, a very gifted
storyteller, came to teach the children about how the moon changes using her
many wonderful props and stories! Our 3s,4s, and 5s were each treated to their
own special presentation! Our yeladim were enthralled!
Morah
Lisa and I love taking this opportunity to share books with our yeladim to mark
Rosh Chodesh as special day. They know how much we love reading and we try to
nurture that love with them as well.
During President's Week, we once again hosted Kulanu children in our Yeshivah.
It is so special to be able to share our wonderful Yeshivah experience with
them. Our children are so kind and reached out to make new friends. We love
practicing the mitzvot of Hachnasat Orchim, kindness "bein adam l'chavero", and
sharing. All our families can be very proud of the wonderful ways our children
interacted with others.
If
you ever wondered what a President does, just ask the 3 year olds! The current
political candidates should check out our newsletter to get some great ideas. I
wonder how the roving reporter does it with a straight face!
Shabbat Shalom!

Four Year Old Nursery Trips to the Fruit Store |
|
The four year old nursery classes have been exploring the themes of health and
nutrition.
As part of their explorations they visited the Glatt Farm fruit store on Central
Avenue. The children, and the parent volunteers who joined them, participated in
a scavenger hunt in the fruit store! They were given a variety of tasks
including "find something red," "find something sweet," and "find something that
you say Borei Peri Haadamah on." While the children were busy
completing their tasks they were having fun and learning about lots of different
fruits and vegetables. Each class was able to purchase some fruits and
vegetables to bring back to school. They held, examined, smelled, and tasted a
delicious and nutritious array of fruits and vegetables. The trips were a
meaningful, multisensory, and enjoyable way for the children to learn about an
important and relevant topic.

A Visit From The Skylab Planetarium |
|
On Wednesday, February 13th, the Skylab Planetarium came to
Lev Chana. The children entered a large blown up bubble where they saw a
simulation of the constellations in outer space. Kim, their guide, also took
them on a "space ride." It was quite a unique experience! Many of the
classes prepared for the planetarium visit by talking about space, planets,
and astronauts. The kindergarten
classes conducted a more in depth study of space with murals, costumes, and
lots of book reading. The Planetarium visit is always a favorite at Lev
Chana. We would like to thank Women's League for sponsoring the visit. |

Storytelling With Rock Davis |
In honor of Rosh Chodesh Adar Aleph the children and Morot of
Lev Chana were privileged to a unique storytelling treat. Rock Davis
taught the children about the moon and the lunar cycle through story and
song.
She was truly entertaining and had the children laughing, listening,
and singing along. Her costume and props were exciting to see, as well. It
was a wonderful way to usher in the month of Adar.

Rosh Chodesh Book Reading |
On Thursday, February 7th, the second day of Rosh Chodesh,
Morah Betty and Morah Lisa once again took the opportunity to read special
stories in each classroom. Morah Betty read Why the Moon Only Glows
by Dina Rosenfeld to the downstairs classes. The story was a wonderful
enhancement to the stories they heard from Rock Davis. Lisa read The
Happiness Box by Bracha Goetz to the upstairs classes. Following the
story the children talked about different ways that they can be happy
especially in the month of Adar. Reading to the children marked
Rosh Chodesh as a special day and gave the children yet another
important positive literacy experience.

Art From The Heart of Lev Chana |
|
The four year old nursery children have been covering a unit about 'healthy
self'. Based on this topic, the children made their own "grove" of Paper Mache
fruit. This certainly was messy but a fun experience for all.
The kindergarten children explored the art of Henri Matisse. The
children collaged positive and negative cut outs to express the nature of
fauvism. Fauvism is characterized
in paintings that use intensely vivid colors which were favored by the artist.
In honor of Presidents' Day the nursery children made their own flags based on
"Three Flags" by Jasper Johns. Instead of painting the flags as a wind blown
banner, Jasper Johns transformed it into a rigid three dimensional painting. The
kindergarten children painted flags based on the neo expressionist Shanoor, who
painted the flag challenging the mind to see it in a new way.

Lev Chana Hosts Kulanu
Children |
During Presidents' week the children of Lev Chana had the opportunity to perform
the mitzvah of Hachnasat Orchim. Five classes hosted children
from Kulanu for the week. Both the Lev Chana children and the Kulanu children
enjoyed spending time together. Most of our guests were here in December as well
and it was nice to have them back again. We would like to thank the SKA students
who joined us in performing this mitzvah.

Hanging A Mezuzah |
A few weeks ago the children in Morot Phyllis and Chaya's four year
old nursery were walking through the Lev Chana building looking for
mezuzot on the door posts. They discovered that the mezuzah on
our front door had fallen down. When Rabbi Klammer visited their classroom
they told him what they had observed. Rabbi Klammer and the children had a
few email correspondences to figure out how and when to rectify the
situation. Of course, when the new mezuzah arrived, the children
helped Rabbi Klammer hang it on the doorpost of our front door. The children
were very proud to participate in this mitzvah. | |
