A Message from Mrs. Spirn
What a pleasure it was to spend Shabbat last
weekend with our SKA family!
It’s hard to believe that we just completed our
fourteenth annual SKA Shabbaton. And what
an
outstanding success it was in all areas! The
ruach,
the achdut, the tefila, the shiurim, Rabbi Harari,
Ahuvah Gray, the sessions, the singing at Seudat
Shlishit, the Talent Show, the melave malke, the
slide show, and the kumsitz were all awesome!
The Shabbaton was phenomenal because
every
student participant worked so hard to make it all
the
more special! Your contributions made the
Shabbaton more exciting, more meaningful, and more
reflective of our talented student body. Our
Seniors were amazing leaders and
helped
each grade become an integral part of the
Shabbaton! Our
faculty
and advisors spent so much "time" with our
students
and got into the groove! The theme song and
decorations were magnificent and gave us a
deeper
understanding of our Shabbaton theme. May we all
be zocheh to be koneh our olam b'shaah achat!
Here's to a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend and
a "quiet" and "restful" Shabbos while we bask in the
emotional and spiritual high from Shabbaton 2006!
.....Rest up, girls!.....
| SHABBATON 2006!! |
 |
|
After a "rocking" pre-Shabbaton ruach
celebration
where we relived our Bat Mitzva era, Shabbaton 2006
seemed to roll around not
a "moment" too
soon. With the theme of
"Yesh koneh olamo b'shaah achat," we had an
incredible "time" at the
Spring Mountain Resort last weekend. With inspiring
speakers Ms. Ahuvah Gray and Rabbi Charlie Harari
and stimulating "Ask the Rabbi" and "Choices"
sessions, students became engaged and interested in
this year's theme, learning to utilize and
maximize their lives to the fullest. Motzei Shabbat
was marked by the annual Talent Show and kumsitz,
and students and faculty alike had a blast. Great
company, great food, great facilities, great achdut,
and a truly
special atmosphere made Shabbaton '06 the best one
yet!

| The Long Island Challenge |
 |
|
On Tuesday, November 14th, the entire Senior
class
boarded two buses to attend the taping of The Long
Island Challenge, a local high school competition. SKA
was selected to participate this year and 12th
graders Ilana Lefkovitz, Danielle Lent, Emily Levine,
and Yoey Sacks enjoyed a photo shoot and "hanging
out in the green room" before coming up on stage to
compete against the team from North Shore High
School. Atara Aeder, alternate, and Mr. Fiedler, Team
Advisor, were sitting in the front row! Although SKA
lost the match, our girls performed well and did us
proud. The ruach,
cheering, signs and T-shirts demonstrated by the
seniors in the audience were something to see. It
really was an unforgettable experience which we will
be able to view on Channel 12. TV viewing times to
be
announced!

| Torah Bowl |
 |
|
Once again, the SKA Torah Bowl Team was
victorious
in competition. The team worked tirelessly to master
the Chumash and Rashi in parshiot Vayikra and Tzav
(a difficult endeavor!) and the girls’ efforts paid off
when they won two out of their four matches at the
HANC Torah Bowl meet. Thank you to Coach Mrs.
Menchel, Captains Mijal Bitton, Danielle Lent, and
Emily Levine, and the entire team for an exciting and
rewarding day!

| AP Biology Trip |
 |
|
The A.P. Bio girls set out on this past Wednesday
with Mrs. Futterman, their teacher,
to
Cold Spring Harbor for an exciting hands-on lab
experience. They learned how to make bacteria glow
in the dark and to understand the biological
reasoning behind it.
Each girl was able to take home her Petri dishes of
bacteria to observe the results of her experiment.
The girls were glad to be able to expand their
knowledge in an exciting and personal way.

| Rosh Chodesh Kislev |
 |
|
Rosh Chodesh Kislev in SKA was an educational
blast!
The day began with the "Rosh Chodesh Girls" going
into all the clasrooms to discuss the uniqueness of
Kislev and it ended with a great Rosh Chodesh
celebration. The G.O. sponsored a party with cakes
of all colors and
pictures of all sorts; it was
definitely a memorable experience. The pictures for
the nursing home were a big hit, and in the end it
looked so beautiful. It was a great way to spend time
with your friends and classmates. With Chanukah
coming soon, it was a great chance to get into the
holiday spirit!

| Volleyball Sonics On A Roll! |
 |
|
On Tuesday night, the SKA Sonics Varsity
Volleyball
Team played against
Shulamith High School. Oh, what a show! We played
three intense games. The Sonics
lost the first one, unfortunately, but had an
incredible comeback in
the second! The score was 24-19 in favor of
Shulamith. They were only one
point away from victory when the Sonics were able
to catch up
and then win the game. It was an
exhilarating victory and really got the Sonics
psyched for their next game. The
tie-breaker started off really well for SKA and we
were
able to defeat Shulamith
with a final score of 15-25. Special thanks to Coach
Aliza Katz.
GO SONICS!!!!

Chevron Program |
|
|
|
In honor of Parshat Chayei Sarah, the students
of
SKA participated in a program about Chevron as part
of the Irving and Toni Rosen Israel Studies and
Programs. Jews around the world worked to
strengthen their connection to and support of
Chevron last week and SKA was no different. A video
presentation on the history of Chevron started
off the program and led into grade-wide Senior-led
chavruta sessions using comprehensive booklets and
materials prepared by the program's coordinator, Mrs.
Leah Feinberg. Finally, the girls were divided into
groups to play "Chevron Bingo", testing their
knowledge of the city's history and presenting new
information in an exciting and fun way. Thank you
Mrs. Feinberg for another wonderfully successful
program!
Lilmod Ule'lamed
Our Lilmod Ule'lamed Program for HALB mothers will
continue at SKA on Tuesday, November 28th at
12:00 PM, with the final class in the series taught

on "The Arab-Israel Conflict: From
Understanding to
Advocacy."
If you would like to sponsor this
Tuesday's shiur, please feel free to contact
