A Message from Mrs. Spirn
|

It's been quite busy these past weeks! We were excited to inaugurate this year's
recruitment efforts for next year's SKA 9th grade, the Class of 2014!
We were thrilled to welcome a record crowd of
8th graders and their parents to our 18th Annual Open House this past Sunday and
were excited to meet students from all over the New York Metropolitan area. We
were happy to greet students from these Elementary Schools: Bais Yaakov of
Queens, Bais Rivka, Bnos Bais Yaakov, Bnos Malka, HAFTR, HALB, HANC, Har Torah,
, North Shore, Ohr Haiim, Shulamith Brooklyn, Shulamith LI, TAG, yeshivas Bais
Hillel, Yeshiiva of Flatbush and YCQ.
We were proud that so many of our students
volunteered their time to serve as tour guides and hostesses and to participate
in our Student Activities Fair and workshops. There were a large number of
freshmen who wanted to share their enthusiasm with the hundreds of people who
attended. Many thanks to our faculty members who ran workshops, participated in
tours and shared their expertise and excitement about the many special academic
offerings and opportunities at SKA.
We are about to begin interviews for the Class of
2013 and look forward to working with our prospective students and their
families!
Mazel tov to the Juniors and Seniors who were
inducted into our Reut chapter of the National Honor Society. Mazel tov to our
Varsity Volleyball and Basketball teams who both won their first games of the
season! Keep up the good work everyone!
It was a wonderful experience spending Leyl Iyun
with our Sophomores last night! I even got to see the Yankees win the World
Series with our cheering 10th grade fans! More to follow about the Leyl Iyun in
our next SKAppenings, but special thanks to Grade Advisors, Mrs. Gross who just
returned from her maternity leave (Mazel tov!), Mrs. Jacobs and Miss Leifer
for a wonderful program focused on Friendship and our team of madrichot who
helped chaperone the sleepover here at SKA. The Sophomores participated with
ruach, enthusiasm and panache!
Please join us this coming Tuesday night at 8:00
PM for our second installment of our Community Wide Lecture Series for Women!
Our guest speaker will be Rabbi Zechariah
Wallerstein, founder and director of the Ohr Naava Women's Torah Center, and noted lecturer. Rabbi
Wallerstein will address the audience on the topic of "Sacrifice: The Greatest Love of All." Hakarat
hatov to our sponsors: Danielle Koppel SKA '11 and her parents, Laurie
& Robert Koppel and Rachel Eskowitz SKA '10 and her parents, Erika &
Sheldon Eskowitz in memory of their grandparents and great-grandparents, Dorothy
& Joseph a"h.
Let me take this opportunity to wish you all a
restful and meaningful Shabbos with family and friends! |
Open House
|
Eighth graders from all around the New York area came with their parents to
learn about the "SKA family" during the SKA Open House on Sunday, October 25th.
Mrs. Spirn welcomed the guests and
introduced the morning with a Power Point presentation describing some of the
unique SKA features. Students and parents met SKA faculty, took tours of the campus
and parents had the opportunity to hear from current students about their SKA
experience. There was surely an excitement that was palpable throughout the
building . We look forward to seeing all of our guests back at SKA next fall!

National Honor Society
|
Twenty-eight students were inducted into the Re'ut Chapter
of the National Honor Society on October 28th. The ceremony began with a Dvar
Torah, which was presented by Dina Eghbali, President of the Re'ut Chapter. The
inductees then presented "The Rainbow", five different slideshows, each
representing a different color, each describing how that particular color can be applied to
both Torah and life. Parents and students had the privilege to hear the words
of Mr. Stephan Savitsky, President of the OU and grandfather of Elana
Schreier (2011) who conveyed the inspiring message that there
is a purpose to the gifts which Hashem bestows upon us and that we must utilize these gifts to influence
the world. What a beautiful evening it was!!
Mazal Tov to all the inductees and their parents.

| Substance Abuse Prevention Program |

The annual Substance Abuse Program was held on Tuesday, October 20th for the 10th graders and their parents. The program was led by Mr. Lewis Abrams, an expert on addictions and Gavi, a recovering alcoholic and drug-abuser, discussed the dangers and realities of substance abuse in everyday life. The students were able to discuss various scenarios and real life situations pertaining to drugs and abuse and were able to ask Gavi questions about her life to gain a better understanding of the severity of substance abuse and the numerous consequences it causes. They learned what to do if they know or suspect a friend who is having substance abuse problems. Thank you to Mrs. Ilana Kheen, an SKA social worker who helped put this program together. 9th Grade Chesed Trip
|
|

The Freshmen had the privilege of going on a truly enjoyable chesed trip to
Bobby's Place. Bobby's Place appears to be a regular store, but in reality, it
is a clothing store for people in need. The girls helped fold, sort, and hang
up clothing to help Bobby's Place look as neat and as presentable as possible
so that the shoppers could feel comfortable. The students learned the great
power that a small chesed contains and look forward to many more SKA chesed
trips in the future!

10th Grade Chesed Trip
|

The 10th grade spent part of
last Wednesday at a clothing Gemach
at the Yudin home sorting, folding and packing all different types of clothing
to be sent to Gemachs all around Israel. Afterwards, they went to Mrs.
Gross' house, the Sophomore GLA, where they ate a scrumptious lunch and heard
an inspirational speech from Rabbi Aryeh Lightstone, the director of NCSY in New York. Thanks to Mrs. Gross, for opening up her
home, to Mrs. Yudin for giving the girls the opportunity to be involved in this
chesed, and to Mrs. Jacobs and Ms. Leifer who accompanied the girls on the
trip.

Hebrew Free Burial Society's cemetery in Staten Island, where they cleaned the cemetery's grounds with
smiles on their faces. The girls were happy to be able to participate in a
chessed shel emet, and returned to SKA with a
great feeling of satisfaction. A special thanks to Mrs. Shmulewitz and

A field trip to Mrs. Kaminetsky's house?? What could
possibly be more fun?
On Wednesday, October
21st, the Senior class went to Mrs. Kaminetsky's house to kick off the Moreshet
Aviva program followed by a yummy soup
and salad lunch. The Moreshet Aviva
program is in memory of Aviva Aryeh a"h, an SKA graduate, who was niftar

Freshmen Leyl Hoshana Raba Learning at Rabbi Rothman's House
|

The 9th
grade was both inspired and entertained at Rabbi Rothman's Sukkah on Layl
Hoshanah Rabbah. The girls "caught up"
up with their friends and ate delicious candies,
fruit, and home baked blondies. Rabbi Rothman shared beautiful divrei Torah
which left the girls with new ideas about the chag. Just when everyone thought
it was time to leave, SKA graduate Atara Feinberg came and sang with the girls,
adding simcha to what was already a wonderful night. Thanks to the Rabbi
Rothman and his entire family for their warm hospitality and for providing the
students with such a fun-filled evening!

National Chemistry Week
|

In honor of National Chemistry Week and the 140th anniversary of the Periodic Table of Elements, the Chemistry students researched a
specific element and then created Icosahedrons, a twenty sided ball, with all
the information about the element on it. The Icosahedrons were proudly hung all
around the school for all to see and learn from. A special thanks to all the
students who participated in this project and to their teachers Mrs. Berger,
Mrs. Glatt and Dr. Kimmel for coordinating this unique learning experience.

| PSATs |
Right after Succot vacation , the students in the tenth and eleventh grade took the PSAT exam. This exam, the preliminary to the SAT, enables students to understand their strengths and weaknesses when taking a national standardized test. In addition, by taking the PSAT/NMSQT, eleventh grade students may qualify to enter the prestigious National Merit scholarships Corporation competition. There are also some students who will be taking the PLAN, the preliminary test to the ACT, in November. We wish hatzlacha rabba to everyone. We know you will do a great job!!

| College Night |
College season has officially arrived at SKA with much anticipation and excitement! On Tuesday, October 13th, representatives from Barnard , Columbia, CUNY, Landers College , Stern College participated in an open panel discussion at SKA. They discussed the basics of applying to their respective colleges and honors program as well as the ever-stressful college essay. Both students and parents alike agreed that it was an extremely informative session. Good luck to everyone in their application processes and a special thanks to Mrs. Sachs and Dr. Meier for organizing this event. Written by:Leah Khukashvilli

| 9th Grade Chesed Fair |

The SKA Chesed Fair was held for the freshman class right after Succoth vacation . The evening began with a wonderful dinner of pizza and fries and divrei Torah presented by Hannah Grossman and Tehila Klein about the importance of giving and chesed . The students watched an amusing Taxi sitcom about the positive feelings of doing chesed and then the night took a more serious turn as Rabbi Zak told two beautiful stories about chesed. Three SKA graduates told the freshmen of their chesed-oriented careers. Alyssa Storch, Yardana Galler, and Michal Zisquit explained to the students that SKA truly helped them discover their love of chesed. Finally, the students went from room to room, learning about the different chesed opportunities available to them in and out of school. Nursing home and hospital visits, soup kitchens, Yachad, Kulanu, Homework Helpers, and Friendship Circle are just a few of the girls' chesed possibilities. The ninth graders had a great night and will now decide how they wish to impact the community through chesed. Written by: Miriam Pearl Klahr

| Tzemach |

The first Tzemach program explored the idea of "Keep Moving Forward" and provided the ninth and tenth graders with a fun, hands-on way to learn and grow. The theme was portrayed to the students in many different ways: through a challenging tile game, with a segment from "Meet the Robinsons" and finally in smaller discussion groups. The students learned not to give up when faced with a challenge and that we learn from our mistakes. Many thanks to Mrs. Segal for this wonderful program. And to all our students we say: "Keep Moving Forward." Written by: Rikki Bulka

Colleges Visit SKA
|

As the excitement increases and application deadlines
approach, the SKA students were honored to meet with
Dean Stoltz-Loike of Touro College for Women, Geri Mansdorf of Stern
College for Women as well as Barnard
representative, Danielle Arieola-Segrove, all of whom visited SKA to talk to
the seniors so that the girls could gain more insight into college life . This
experience certainly made the college process much easier for the enthusiastic
SKA students. A special thanks to Dr. Meier and Mrs. Sachs for organizing these
events.
