A Message from Mrs. Spirn
|

It's been an exciting two weeks of activities, sports games ,evening
programs, special events and of course, learning!
We were honored to have Gila Manolson, noted author and speaker, here at
SKA on Monday to address all of our students as part of our first MACS sponsored
event for this year. We were especially proud that our students on the MACS
committee were able to run relevant and meaningful workshops that made our girls
think and reflect. Kol hakavod!
Rabbi Rothman and I have already begun interviewing our 8th grade
applicants and we are thrilled by the many applications we have received. We
look forward to welcoming our special guests for their interviews and some
special time at SKA.
Our Seniors and their parents participated on Wednesday evening at the Long
Island Israel Night which was hosted by HANC this year. So many schools, so
many students, so many decisions! The Israel application process has begun!
The spotlight is on our Seniors as they attend the various workshops at SKA
conducted by the Israel schools. Shiurim, question and answer sessions,
personal interviews and even entrance exams will be routine events for our
Seniors over the weeks ahead. We wish our Seniors much hatzlacha as they
formally begin this process with excitement and some trepidation. Girls, we know
you will do great!
Shabbaton fever is building as we prepare for our weekend retreat at the
Raleigh Hotel next Shabbos! We look forward to the special achdut, ruach,
fun and creativity that has become the highlight of each and every one of our
SKA Shabbatons. Shabbaton will certainly be an important part of our next
newsletter!
Our hearts are with the thousands of our brothers and sisters in Hebron
this Shabbos as they gather together for Parshat Chaye Sarah!
I wish you all a meaningful and restful Shabbos! I know that next week
won't be restful, but will certainly be eventful and exciting! Shabbat
Shalom!

| Rabbi Wallerstein Speaks at SKA |
On Tuesday evening, November 3rd, many SKA students and mothers came to SKA to hear Rabbi Wallerstein speak on Sacrifice: The Greatest Love of All. Rabbi Wallerstein gave a new perspective on the meaning of love and explained that if one really loves someone , he will "sacrifice" his personal agenda for the sake of the other person. Rabbi Wallerstein kept everyone interested with his exciting stories and "shopping pointers." Thank you, Rabbi Wallenstein for an entertaining and enlightening shiur. Special thanks to our sponsors the Koppel and Eskowitz families for sponsoring the shiur in memory of Dorothy and Joseph A. Dachs a"h. Written by: Miri Shatzman |

MACS is Back!
|
|

MACS is back! On Monday November 9th , MACS (Modesty Awareness Committee for Students) opened the year with Mrs. Gila Manolson, noted author of "The Magic Touch" and "Outside Inside." Mrs. Manolson spoke the students about what it means to be tzanuah and how the concept of shomer negiah is part of modesty. Students then broke up into "buzz" groups where they read excerpts written by female students from other high schools, describing their perspectives on tzniut. Everyone learned a tremendous amount and enjoyed the program very much! Special thanks to Mrs. Manolson for coming to speak to SKA , to the MACS Committee for coordinating such a fantastic program, to Mrs. Kobre and Mrs. Segal, MACS faculty advisors and to Mrs. Kaminetsky, Director of Religious Guidance.

Sophomore Layl Iyun
|
Why are sophomores wearing pajamas to school?! Thursday night, October 29th, had much excitement in store. An elaborate pizza dinner was a great way to start off an event filled with learning, eating, talking, a little bit of sleep...and lots of fun!!! Relating the theme of friendship to Torah ideas was a meaningful way to learn about this important topic. The workshops led by several teachers really gave the students an interactive opportunity to discuss many aspects of the "ultimate friendship." A student-planned "SKAvenger hunt" was a great asset to the evening followed by various activities including "fruit plattering", sports playing, hair ironing, and much more. On Friday morning, the Sophomores were woken up bright and early to daven, eat breakfast and head off to the Woodmere Rehabilitation Center. With roses in hand, the students brightened the day of the residents, which was a beautiful way to prepare for Shabbos. Thank you to the Madrichot Atara Feinberg and Jessica Cohen who joined the girls and to Madrichot Shayna Gottessman, Simone Nussbaum and Yardana Galler, who slept over, keeping the Sophomores safe and sound. Thank you to the Sophomores' Grade Level Advisors, Mrs. Gross, Mrs. Jacobs and Ms. Leifer , and to Rabbi Zak for working so hard to make such a special program for the tenth grade!!

SHAC Breakout!!
|
On November 4th, the Shmirat HaLashon Action Committee, SHAC, introduced it's exciting new program for this coming year. The entire school gathered in the auditorium for an engaging movie presentation of UP as well as an awesome activity. The girls wrote a positive compliment on a piece of paper, put the paper into a balloon, threw the balloons into the air and caught a different one. When they popped the balloon, they received the compliment inside! In continuing with the theme of 'going up', Mrs. Kaminetsky spoke beautifully to the girls about our ability elevate others through speech and the impact we have on others through our words. We cannot wait to see more of SHAC and their uplifting presentations in the future. A special thanks to Mrs. Jacobs, the SHAC participants and Mrs. Kaminetsky for making this year's SHAC breakout so memorable.

Seminaries Visit Seniors
|
After an informative "Israel Night" at HANC, SKA Seniors were privileged to hear from several seminary representatives within the walls of SKA. Representatives from Midreshet Amit, Midreshet Lindenbaum, Shaalvim, Tiferet ,MMY , Baer Miriam and Maayanot met with perspective students and some gave model shiurim in order to give the girls a taste of the seminary learning. The girls look forward to welcoming more representatives in the coming weeks! |
| SKA Students Visit Stern for TLN |

On Thursday night, November 5th, girls from SKA, Buriah, Frisch, Central, Ma'ayanot and other girls' high schools gathered together at Stern College for Torah Learning Network (TLN), a night of fun and learning. After a great dinner from Dougie's, and a raffle for an iPod shuffle, the girls divided into groups, learned with several madrichot from Stern College and heard shiurim from Rabbi Hidary and Rabbi Hajioff who teach at Stern College. Thanks to SKA and TLN for providing the girls with this great experience! A special thanks to Ms. Borg for coordinating the transportation for the girls to and from the city! Israel Night
|
The anxiety in Senior hallway diminished slightly after the Seniors finally heard from the Israel schools themselves at the annual Long Island "Israel Night" at HANC, held on November 11th. The Seniors have been reading about the schools and meeting with Grade Level Advisors. Now each student was able to visit three to four schools and hear directly from representatives themselves. A special thanks to Mrs. Kobre , Mrs. Ralbag and Mrs. Kaminetsky for continuing to guide the girls in the seminary application process! |
Yearbook Pictures
|
The Senior class is already hard at work, creating a beautiful Yearbook for the Class of 2010! On Sunday, Nov 1st, the twelfth graders took Yearbook pictures at SKA. Everyone looked beautiful and there has been in a flurry of excitement since the pictures became available online. Thank you to Art Photographers for a spectacular job and to Mrs. Ralbag, the Yearbook Faculty Advisor. A special thanks to the Editors in Chief, Emily Feldman and Penina Wein, for coordinating the pictures and making sure the schedule on Sunday went smoothly.

This week was an exciting for SKA! REDETAM introduced a new weekly event at SKA - "TGIT" (Thank G-d It's Thursday) - where they sold (and will continue to sell) croissants for one dollar each! "TGIT" will be a weekly event, just like "Muffin Monday." REDETAM is really looking forward to SKAbbaton 2009 - one more week!!!
