A Message from Mrs. Spirn
We are about to begin our Pesach break and engage more deeply in our hachanot for Pesach.  Cleaning, kashering, cooking, shopping, baking, traveling, car washing, haircuts....the list of preparations is endless and our responsibilities are many. Of course, we must physically remove our chametz, both physically and spiritually, as we prepare for our Sedarim and zman cheirutainu.

At this time of year, we are reminded that  "Bizchut nashim tzidkaniyot nigalu avoitanu mimitzrayim."  Our female ancestors played a special role in the redemption of bnei yisrael from mitzrayim.  Their emunah was incredibly strong and their actions during challenging times cemented their deep relationship with HaKadosh Baruch Hu. Their commitment to Jewish continuity during our period of slavery showed their extraordinary dedication to  Hashem in all aspects of their lives.

We must strive to emulate that deep bitachon as we remove our spiritual chametz. Our spirtual chametz is what personally  gets in our way of  living a Torah oriented life, what blocks us from elevating our neshamot and bringing us closer to Hashem.  The Jews in Mitzrayim persevered because of their deep emunah in Hashem. They knew that Hashem would redeem them and eventually they would become His people. They witnessed many miracles bestowed upon them by Hashem as they became more deeply connected to Hashem.  We too experience many miracles in our lives and must have the bitachon in Hashem to recognize them as such. In our recent storm, we were reminded of our reliance on nature and how things can swing out of control ever so quickly.  We must always look for the miracles of Hashem that can deepen our relationship, if we can recognize them hidden under the inconveniences and "chametz"  of our lives.

I am ever so proud of the efforts of this year's At Ptach Editors in Chief, Rachel Ehrlich and Rivkie Weiss, so ably assisted by Layout Editors Ayelet Lerner and Deena Miller, who have produced a beautiful Haggadah that will enrich the Sedarim of our SKA family. Special hakarat hatov to faculty advisor, Rabbi David Friedman, who inspired our girls to produce thoughtful divrei Torah! We know that  At Ptach will add a  meaningful spiritual and intellectual component to our Chag, as we fulfill the mitzvah of Sippur Yetziat Mitzrayim.

Our inschool hachanot for Pesach have been plentiful in our Torah shebeal Peh and Tanach classes, at our Haggadah Roundtable, at our Chesed program with Otzar, at our Tzemach programs and MAC Chats, and at our outing to YU where our students were inspired by Rabbi Sachs, Chief Rabbi of England.  We have enjoyed our Chametz sales by the G.O., even more than cleaning out our lockers and desks as we prepared together for the upcoming Chag!

A special mazel tov to our SKA Basketball Sonics who won this year's League Championship in one of the most exciting and nailbiting games ever!  Girls, you were  amazing and I was awed by your performance in the second half of the game where you showed extraordinary teamwork and proved how every point makes a difference!  As incredible as this sounds, this was our 15th Championship in a row for our Basketball team!  Special hakarat hatov to Coach Rivkie Pianko '02 who brought our team to this year's win with her emphasis on midot, teamwork and respect for each individual player! Kol hakavod to all the members of this year's team for an outstanding season!

And now it's a countdown to Pesach!  Make the most of your preparations as we spiritually and physically remove our chametz and get ready to experience our personal and collective zman cheirutainu.  May we all be zocheh to deepen our relationship with Hashem as we spend an elevating Chag together with family and friends!  CHAG SAMEACH!

SKA Seniors Help Make A Wedding!!

There was wedding fever in the Senior hallway of SKA during the weeks prior to Monday, March 15. The whole grade was abuzz with excitement, busy with preparations for the wedding of Daniella Saffioti and Yishai Romanoff. Joined by their equally enthusiastic GLAs and Mrs. Kaminetsky, the Seniors worked eagerly, making beautiful decorations and baskets, cooking up hilarious schitck, and even designing the Chuppah! When the big day finally came, there was no one more ready to be Misameach Chatan V'Kallah than the Sen-ten-ritas, who all arrived at the Young Israel of Lawrence-Cederhurst with broad smiles and unwavering energy. The Kabalat Panim and the Chuppah were gorgeous, and the dancing that followed was out of this world. The seniors felt so privileged to be able to partake in couple's simcha and to perform the wonderful mitzvah of being Misameach Chatan V'Kallah. When asked to sum up the night in a sentence, one senior, undoubtedly mirroring the sentiments of all of her peers, said "It was the best night ever in every possible way!" Mazal Tov to the Chatan and Kallah! We thank them so much for allowing us to partake in their simcha! Also thanks to our GLAs and to Mrs. Kaminetsky! Finally, an extra special thank you to Mrs. Nicole Gleitman for organizing not only the wedding we participated in but many others as well. You truly are an inspiration!

Tzemach Program: Inspires Again!
Did you ever feel like you weren't ready for something spiritually stimulating, so you always procrastinated because you're not ready "to grow?" The Tzemach program proved all that wrong and enabled the 9th and 10th graders to realize that spiritual growth was indeed in reach! The students heard an inspiring speech from Mrs. Segal and watched an entertaining, but meaningful movie called The Challenge. One girl exclaimed, "This program demonstrated that you could really improve your middot and attitude with just a little effort. It's totally possible!" At the end of the program, the students were told to write something that would challenge them spiritually and then try to do it for one week. Whoever chose to participate in this challenge would be entered into a raffle to win an amazing prize. A special thanks to Mrs. Segal, Mrs. Storch and Rabbi Zak for organizing a program to help us reach our full potential!

Sir Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

Last Wednesday, Juniors from all over the East coast gathered in Stern College to hear the renowned Sir Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. Rabbi Sacks is the Chief Rabbi of England, and is a very important figure in the Jewish community worldwide. He spoke so beautifully about the power of education in Judaism, and the koach that each person has to carry out his or her tafkid in the world. It was definitely an amazing experience for the Juniors! If anyone is interested in learning more from Rabbi Sacks, he has published several books and has a website full of intellectually stimulating articles.

Otsar Prepares For Pesach at SKA

This past Tuesday was a day filled with chesed and fun! The Freshmen Class welcomed Otsar, an organization that helps adults with developmental disabilities. Some of the girls put on a skit about Pesach, some organized a Makkot fair, and others helped the members of Otsar make Matzah covers. Afterward, everyone participated in a dance party in the auditorium. A great time was had by all and many special relationships were formed between the SKA Freshman and the Otsar members. We look forward to sharing many more events. Shout out to Mrs. Gelertner for her help in organizing this amazing program!

MACS Chats

Doesn't MACS stand for Modesty Awareness Committee for Students?! Yes...but this week, MACS was more than just modesty awareness! Girls were invited to participate in "MACS Chats," during which students had the opportunity to hear from various teachers about the true meaning of modesty, while enjoying delicious mac 'n cheese! Thank you to all of the MACS Heads for their effort in providing the students with a fun-filled, yet learning experience. Thank you to Rabbi Rothman, Mrs. Chafetz, Mrs. Kaminetsky, and Mrs. Kobre for sharing such inspiring and insightful ideas.
Sophomore/Preschool Makkot Program

Blood, Froggies, Lice?
The Tenth Graders had an outstanding opportunity this week to pair up with the Lev Chana preschoolers for a pre-Pesach program. Learning with their Makkot kits in hand and singing Pesach songs galore... it was unclear who had more fun! Thank you to the 10th grade GLA's - Mrs. Gross, Mrs. Jacobs, and Miss Leifer - as well as the Morahs from Lev Chana for organizing such a unique experience for the girls.

Trip to the Curious George Exhibit!

Most people have heard of our furry little monkey friend, Curious George, which made the Freshman trip to the Curious George exhibit at the Jewish Museum even more exciting! The students were delighted to see the behind the scenes creation of the Curious George books, including the different drawing formats and hundreds of drafts and ideas.  The Ninth Graders saw firsthand the amount of effort that goes into writing, designing and publishing a book. They even got a chance to write and illustrate our own stories!!  At the end, it was revealed to the girls that Curious George is not just a children's book. It was, rather, a story based on the war-time years of Holocaust survivors, Margret and H. A. Ray.  Through this fascinating exhibit, the Freshmen class discovered the deeper meaning behind our little hairy friend's adventure!

Open Beit Midrash

What a fun filled night! A night full of learning, questioning, and eating at Open Beit Midrash was certainly an enjoyable way to get ready for Pesach. The Senior class, Madrichot and teachers made it a special event and helped deliver well rounded dvrei Torah for students to share at their own Pesach S'darim. Special thanks to Rabbi Aryeh Leibowitz for joining the girls for a question-answer session in preparation for the chag. Thank you Ms. Borg for coordinating the evening and for making it a truly enjoyable as well as inspiring night!

Haggaddah Round-Table

An interactive activity designated for the Senior class, the Haggadah Round-Table Event, was certainly enjoyed by all of the girls. Each girl had to prepare a dvar torah on a certain topic and then share it in "round table" groups. At the sound of a bell, girls switched groups and shared their divrei Torah with new fellow group members. It was an inspiring sight to see all the girls working hard and participating in such a worthwhile program! Thank you to Mrs. Ralbag, Mrs. Kobre, and Mrs. Kaminetsky for organizing the program and helping to facilitate its success!

Blood Drive

On Tuesday March 16th, the students of SKA participated in the blood drive. A total of thirty one pints were donated to the American Red Cross. The gym was a hopping place as the different stations were occupied all day. As well as the SKA students themselves, many "outsiders" came to donate blood simply because they happened to have seen the sign outside. Baruch Hashem it was quite a successful program - thank you all for enduring the process! Thank you to the Blood Drive Heads, blood donors, and to the American Red Cross members who came to help out and make the day a giving one.
