| SKA Production 2010 |

This year, the SKA Annual Production which took place on Motzei Shabbos, January 2nd and Sunday, January 3rd, was held once again on the SKA stage. The girls' talents certainly shined through after the hours and hours of practicing for the highly anticipated Production 2010. This year's theme of "Shabbos" was clearly depicted through song, dance, and drama.
The students performed for three packed audiences full of moms, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, teachers, friends and alumnae. The voices of the choir were strong and beautiful as they sang, amongst other songs, "Lecha Dodi" and "Welcome Home." The dances were sharp as they depicted various aspects of Shabbos - from the preparatory work to the benefits of Shabbos itself. The white hands of the signers shone in the dark. The musical drama, comedy, and ensemble brought everyone to laughter, smiles, and song. Even the drama heads and choir heads got into the act with their own presentations.
What pride we all had in our students! And what delight they had in themselves as over 190 students gathered on the stage for a final curtain call to the thunderous applause of the audience! Thank you to the actresses, the dancers, the singers, the narrators, the signers, the backstage and tech team, the band, the ticket sellers, the usherettes, the Baybill staff and the Heads. Thank you to Mrs. Libin for the artistic touches and costumes, to Mrs. Bowe for the Sign Language direction, to Mrs. Gelertner for her help with comedy, and to Mrs. Sova for working with the dancers. A million thanks to Mrs. Terri Wagner, the director and "First Lady of SKA Theater" and to her 12th grade ProductionAssistants: Shlomit Kahan, Ayala Magder, Rachel Chaya Siman-Tov, and Temi Zomick who took care of every detail with grace and efficiency. Thank you to all those who worked backstage with lighting, curtains, and scenery. Your work surely paid off! Finally, a tremendous thanks to Mrs. Spirn and Rabbi Zak who made this all happen. Girls, you did it again! Auditions for Production 2011 will start soon! Details to follow! Can't wait!

| Teacher Workshops |

The first of a series of stimulating faculty workshops took place at SKA this week. The series was planned by the SKA support staff and each workshop will be designed to foster a greater understanding of specific academic or mental health issues with an emphasis on strategies for addressing these issues in the classroom. The first workshop, which took place on January 5th, was about "Executive Functioning," which involves the directive capacities of the brain and impacts skills such as planning, organizing, self-regulating, and problem solving. The workshop was given by our District Resource Room teacher, Mrs. Robin Klein, Mrs. Sara Taib, our Learning Specialist, and our BOCES School Psychologist, Mrs. Malka Ismach. The hour began with an introduction to the concept of Executive Functioning and how it impacts specific classroom skills and activities. It concluded with practical strategies that teachers can use on an everyday basis. Teachers were actively involved throughout the workshop via questions, insightful discussion and helpful suggestions, which added tremendously to the dynamic atmosphere. |
Senior Seminar Ask the Rabbi Session
|

With inspirational speakers and fun interactive programs, Senior Seminar is one of the most engaging classes of senior year. Wednesday, December 30 was no exception. The Seniors participated in an "Ask the Rabbi" session featuring a panel of our very own SKA Rebbeim, Rabbi Friedman, Rabbi Rothman and Rabbi Zak. From what bracha do you make on sushi to discussing the mitzvah of Yishuv Eretz Yisroel, it was certainly a very informative session. An extra special thanks to Mrs. Kaminetsky, Mrs. Kobre, Mrs. Ralbag and all of the Rabbis who participated. Written by: Leah Khukashvili

SKA Students Volunteer for Kulanu
|
Last week, the SKA students had the unique opportunity to shadow Kulanu children at Lev Chana. The girls spent time with the Kulanu children in their classrooms and really enjoyed helping them do various arts and crafts projects. A special thanks to Lev Chana, Mrs. Storch and all of the students who participated. Written by: Esti Chesner |
International Book Sharing
|
The 12th grade English AP class is once again participating in the International Book Sharing Program. This year our Israeli partners are from Ulpana Tsviya in Maalot. Together we are reading and studying Night, Eli Wiesel's compelling memoir/historical fiction. On Jan. 5th, Lana Bernhardt, the coordinator for the American schools presented SKA with a plaque, praising our involvement in the international academic community. She also discussed aspects of the program and the Holocaust and showed a short film, "Pigeon," dealing with an act of random kindness that illustrated many of the ideas we had been discussing. |
| Math Team Competition |
| Although many students take math just because they have a Regent awaiting them, several students are members of the SKA Math Team, an extra-curricular club that meets weekly to prepare for the periodical challenges at DRS. The girls worked hard and we're proud of their efforts at tackling the challenging questions which they were asked! |
Seminary and College Interveiws
|
How fortunate the Seniors are to have officially completed the seminary interviewing process. After HaRova interviewed last week, the Seniors finished all of their interviews and now they wait in great anticipation as their letters from the schools will be sent out within the next few days. Touro College also interviewed its applicants last week, and we are so proud of the Senior class for making it through these stressful past few months! |
Sports Update
|

What a competitive week for the SKAthletic teams! Although Varsity Volleyball and Basketball suffered frustrating losses to Shulamith and Ilan respectively, the JV Volleyball team brought home a win! The JV girls played beautifully against HAFTR and we are very proud of their skills and sportsmanship. The teams' members look forward to resuming practice and games after winter break! | |

G.O. Corner
|
|
REDETAM can hardly believe that half the year is practically complete! Between "Muffin Mondays" and "TGIT," these months have certainly flown by! Remember apple bobbing and building sukkahs with graham crackers and fluff? How about potato kugel and soda during break? Or Honey Nut Cheerios and Apple Jacks necklace making? It's been a great first half of the year and the G.O. can hardly wait for an even better second half! Thanks again to all those teachers and students who contributed to this year's superb Chanukah Auction. Enjoy the candy bags to alleviate the midterm stresses! Much hatzlacha on exams and G.O. wishes each of you a beautiful, relaxing, rejuvenating vacation!
