A Message from Mrs. Spirn
What word have we been obsessed with these past few weeks? If we ran a survey, there is no doubt in my mind that the "hottest" word would be SNOW along with its derivative SNOW DAY.  How much time, thought and anticipation have gone into our listening to and watching weather reports, accessing them on online, calling the SKA Hotline dozens of times and engaging in countless hours of "WILL WE HAVE SCHOOL TOMORROW?"  And don't forget, "WILL THEY CANCEL OUR GRADE TRIPS?"  "WHEN WILL THEY BE RESCHEDULED?" "WILL IT SNOW AGAIN SOON, PLEASE?!?"

A little Purim Torah in light of the snow....If you were at my Purim Open House, you may have learned that the Gematria of Shemesh and Spirn are the same (640); hopefully that makes our home a warm and inviting  place to be, whether it's snowing outside or not.  Now if you take the gematria of the word SHELEG, that equals 333 and add your 19 berachot of this morning's Shemoneh Esra we get 352, which is the same gematria as "NESIA TOVA L' TIYULIM!" (352)

We wish our students SNOW FREE trips as our Freshmen depart for Connecticut, our Sophomores for Washington, D.C., our Juniors for their two day Jewish Life trip and our Seniors for their cultural day in the city.  May you feel the warmth of the SHEMESH and the closeness of your individual grades and the special relationships with your teachers as you embark on your exciting trips.

We hope you all enjoy this SNOW delayed issue of SKAppenings.  We can't wait to share our upcoming Purim edition of SKAppenings with amazing pictures and updates of our G.O. Chagiga, Grade Parties, and Chodesh Adar Dress Up Days!  Stay tuned!

NESIA TOVA to all of our students! Can't wait to hear all about EVERYTHING!
SKA MOTHER-DAUGHTER BRUNCH

Over 300 women gathered together at the White Shul on Sunday, February 21st for the annual Parent Council Mother-Daughter Brunch to honor two  of the most beloved teachers of the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls,  Mrs. Elisheva Kaminetsky and Mrs. Ellen Lavner.   From the thunderous applause and heartfelt speeches, it was clear to the students, mothers, family, and friends in the room that this breakfast was not just an ordinary tribute. The very affectionate video presentations prepared by SKA students showed the deep appreciation and love felt for these two master teachers.   Mrs. Yocheved Goldberg, Mrs. Carol Krauss, and Mr. Heshy Schertz, the heads of the Parent Council and organizers of this beautiful event, also expressed how wonderful it was to work with the honorees in preparing for the morning.

In her opening words, SKA's Principal, Mrs. Helen Spirn, noted her shared personal history with Mrs. Elisheva  Kaminetsky with hasgacha pratis leading the way to their service and dedication together at this school.   Mrs. Kaminetsky, who is also Director of Religious Guidance at SKA, has been inspiring students and their mothers for thirteen years with her classes, lectures, and personal mentoring.  Remarkedly connected to her students, Mrs. Kaminetsky noted in her speech that "before we can really teach, we must get to know our students, understand their ways, help them develop their potential, and uncover their unique purpose." Married to Rabbi Yisroel Kaminetsky, menahel of DRS, her house constantly alternates between gatherings of SKA and DRS students!  Her students describe Mrs. Kaminetsky as "caring" and "intuitive" and her warmth extends to all.  It's easy to see why she generates such an enthusiastic response - one girl on the video expressed the thought of many - "when she speaks, I always feel as if she's talking to me alone."

Fifteen years ago, Mrs. Ellen Lavner joined the faculty of SKA to manage the Mock Trial Team, and luckily for SKA,  she never left!  A passionate and dedicated teacher of American History,  Economics and AP  Government and Politics,  Mrs. Lavner has brought a wealth of knowledge to her classes.  With a law degree and Masters in Public Affairs, this very modest and brilliant educator shares her dry witticisms with her classes along with the wisdom she imparts; "she's so funny!" her students relate.  As the coordinator of SKA's innovative Senior Work Study Program, Mrs. Lavner enables students to benefit from the opportunity to consider alternative career choices by working for the month in lieu of attending classes; feedback from both students and their employers has been overwhelmingly positive!  "I love my students and I love what I teach," she says.  Her affection is returned in spades!

"I was so happy that I was there and could show both Mrs. Kaminetsky and Mrs. Lavner my hakaras hatov for everything they've done for me," a senior says. " I know I'll be in touch with them after graduation, after Israel, and for years to come!"  A younger faculty member expressed her appreciation as well.  "As a teacher, it was wonderful for me to see the impact one can have on the girls and the faculty. The dedication  and commitment Mrs. Kaminetsky and Mrs. Lavner have are so inspiring for me."

SKA's administration, faculty, parents, and students are honored to have such devoted professionals on staff!

SCHOOLWIDE INTERNATIONAL PURIM CHAGIGA

Where did you want to be on Wednesday, February 24? Why, at SKA of course, where the house was jumping (literally) with an incredible chagigah! The theme this year was "All Around the World" and the costumes didn't disappoint. There were Irish leprechauns, chic French girls, kimono-clad Geishas, fanny pack toting tourists and more. The activities were equally exciting, with country themed booths like hair braiding in "Jamaica," caricature drawing in "France," and fine dining in "Italy" all set up in a gym strewn with flags, blasting music from all over the world. After the girls had their fair share of entertainment with the interactive booths, they eagerly entered the auditorium for entertainment of a different kind with Dovid Stein and the Shlomo Dachs band. The enthusiasm and excitement was unparalleled as the girls danced their way through festive Purim songs. The fabulous night ended with Italian ices (of course), and the seniors serenaded the school with the customary "L'shana Habah." Special thanks to the G.O. Rabbi Zak and Mrs. Siegel for all their hard work to make this chagigah one of the best ever!

PANCAKE DRESS-UP!

In honor of Rosh Chodesh Adar, the G.O. prepared a delicious treat for everyone to enjoy. Tables were set up in the auditorium with pancakes and an array of different toppings to choose from. We "dressed up" our pancakes with the various toppings and everyone had a blast! We truly experienced "M' Sh'Nichnas Adar, Marbim B'Simcha!!"

MITZVAH FAIR

The Mitzvah Fair, presented to the Senior Grade as part of their weekly Senior Seminar, was a huge success! All of the mitzvot discussed were highly relevant to young Jewish women and applicable to modern day life. The mitzvot presented included:  Shaatnez, Borer, applying makeup on Shabbos, and B'dika, the checking, of vegetables. Since these halachot contain many specific stipulations not particularly clear to everyone, the girls were extremely enthused to learn about them! The students had the opportunity to experiment with Shabbos makeup, check for bugs in vegetables like romaine lettuce and strawberries, determine the proper way to separate items on Shabbos, and learn the important details of Shaatnez. Overall, the program was exceptionally informative and the Senior Class would like to thank all those who took their time out to inform us about these essential halachot!

KULANU
Have you seen the countless number of SKA girls walking to the Lev Chana Early Childhood building? No, they are not longing to be in preschool, but are running to do a tremendous chesed! The students had the unique opportunity to shadow and mentor children in the Kulanu program in the Lev Chana Pre-School. The girls enjoyed helping the children with art projects, singing songs and learning about Purim. A special thanks to Lev Chana for coordinating with SKA to allow for this amazing opportunity. Also, thanks to Kulanu heads, Rachel Chaya Siman-Tov and Shayna Frankel.

SENIOR SEMINAR GIFT WRAPPING

If you walked into the SKA Library during periods five and six on Wednesday, February 17th and saw 80 Seniors wrapping everything from dish towels to mops, we hope you were not alarmed.  As part of a chesed project to culminate our last year together, the Senior Class has taken on the task of planning and enhancing the wedding of a couple in the area.  Last Wednesday, the Seniors used their Senior Seminar periods to beautifully wrap and organize all the gifts they had bought for the wedding shower that would occur later that day. There was
definitely excitement in the air as the girls anticipated being m'sameach hakallah in just a few short hours!

SENIORS COORDINATE BRIDAL SHOWER!!

On Wednesday night, the Seniors gathered at the home of Rebecca Ganz to
begin the exciting preparations for the bridal shower.  From tossing salads
to making dessert platters to hanging balloons all around the house, the
Seniors did a fabulous job at making a beautiful shower.  When the kallah
arrived, she was immediately brought into a circle full of ruach and
simcha.  The wedding shower continued with delicious food and watching the
kallah open her many presents purchased by the Seniors and the kallah's
friends and family. It was truly a great opportunity to be m'sameach kallah
and we can't wait to dance at her wedding!

SKAPPAREL IS HERE!
When you walk into SKA, you will now see the SKA students strutting down the hallway sporting their new SKApparel, displaying their SKA pride! Thanks to the G.O. for designing these items!
SHAC: MASKING OUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

The theme this month for SHAC is "masking our expressions," in conjunction with the month of Adar. This emphasizes the power of facial expressions and using them to uplift rather than diminish. SHAC introduced this theme by creating an exciting school-wide contest based on who can make the best facial expression. Each contestant will have to take a picture making an expression and write a positive blurb underneath it.  The winner will receive the unique prize of having her picture hanging right next to the picture of Stella K. Abraham. Good luck to all the girls; keep in mind the power of your facial expressions!

Mock Trial

The SKA Mock Trial Team has been very busy lately with nightly practices and two trials in the past two weeks. On Tuesday, February 8th the team headed to the courthouse in Mineola for their first match against Jericho High School. Although the SKA girls played their parts superbly, Jericho won by a slim margin. The next trial took place on Wednesday February 24th, also in
Mineola, against Bethpage High School. This time SKA was victorious! Thanks to our captains, Rachel Ehrlich and Danielle Zucker and our coaches, Mr. Zucker and Ms. Statman for two amazing trials!

FINAL MATH MEET

This past Tuesday, SKA participated in the final Math Team competition ofthe year. Unlike the other meets, this meet was a team effort where the girls were allowed to collaborate to solve the problems. Given a 45 minute time limit, the girls worked quickly and efficiently. At the end of the day, it was not the results that mattered, but the amount of fun the girls had and the level of achdus they showed! A special thanks to Mrs. Budne for coaching this

talented team!

Sports Update

This week was an exciting one for the SKA sports teams! The SKA Basketball Team played an extraordinary game against Magen David and was victorious by a mere four points. Phew! We look forward to the upcoming games for the JV and Varsity Volleyball Teams and wish them much hatzlacha!
G.O. Corner

It's been quite an exciting month of Adar so far for the students of SKA! In honor of Rosh Chodesh, "REDETAM" provided the student body with the opportunity to "dress up" pancakes. Girls sand and danced after dressing up their pancakes with tons of delicious toppings. The festivities continued as the entire school filed into the gym this week for the annual Purim chagigah. The evening's "World Fair," international cuisine, and leibadik dancing proved to be quite a fun-filled for all. We look forward to continuing this month of Adar with tons of fun and high spirits!
