A Message from Mrs. Spirn
It's hard to believe that five weeks ago I sat in the audience of another successful Production performance, went home to say goodbye to my family and then left for an 8 day whirlwind trip to Eretz Yisrael with Mrs. Pahgit Ralbag, Senior Grade Level Advisor and Israel Guidance Counselor.  After we collected our luggage, our first stop was a hotel in Yerushalayim, where we wished mazel tov to graduate Sheva Odzer '07 at her wedding!  Later in the week, I had the opportunity to do so at the l'chaim of graduate Mindel Zomber '07.

Our SKA Reunion for the Class of 2009 took place that first evening and we were thrilled that 74 graduates came to participate.  Although many girls see each other frequently, this was the first time so many girls had gathered in an official way as the Class of 2009. There were lots of hugs, smiles and tears as we all enjoyed each other's company and had the opportunity to hear how everyone had transitioned to their year in Israel. We came with video in hand and our graduates were oohing and aahing when they watched former teachers and administrators sharing their divrei bracha with the girls.  (Next year I will remember to bring tissues too; we all emote in different ways!).  We had the chance to take a few group pictures, share our schedule for the week and bask in the nostalgia of the Class of 2009.  The girls were disappointed that I hadn't brought a Production DVD but how could I do that the weekend of Production?  Special thanks to Dr. Meier and Mrs. Kobre who solved that problem just two weeks later at Reunion #2!!

Mrs. Ralbag and I had the opportunity to visit with more than 80 students studying in Israel this year and we visited 15 schools.  At each seminary, we checked in with the administration, took pictures with our students and tried to collect information and insights from our graduates that we could share with our 12th graders.  Our favorite parts of the trip, unquestionably, were our individual meetings with our girls and the opportunity to hear about everyone's year and their personal challenges and highlights, in the classroom and beyond. Somehow, we seemed to run late wherever we were, because it was too hard to leave and impossible to limit our individual meetings once they got going.  And of course, we never wanted to say goodbye.

We are proud of the Class of 2009 and their growth and learning this year in Eretz Yisrael and yet, we know and reminded our graduates, that the growth this second half of the year will be the most powerful and enduring!  What an inspiring image watching our students learning Torah in Yerusahalyaim and the Gush with enthusiasm and a sincere desire to develop a deeper and more meaningful relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu!  What nachat we felt hearing of their individual accomplishments in learning and mido development!  What pride we felt in hearing about their growing love and personal connection to Eretz Yisrael and their desire to feel connected beyond this year!

We shared a spiritual experience with Adi Fried '09 who is participating in Sherut L'eumi and is assigned to the Kotel tunnel tours.  Adi led Mrs. Ralbag and myself underground to the location of what once was the Kadosh Hakedashim and reflected on the sense of kedusha she feels each and every day she takes guests on her special tour and the seyata dishmaya of being placed at her specific location.

Here's to the Class of 2010 whose desire to study in Eretz Yisrael is so strong!  We are so proud of your record of acceptances and look forward to visiting you next year and hearing about your transitions and the highlights of your year!

Mazel tov on your acceptances and deciding where you will spend your year of study and personal growth!  We couldn't be prouder and we are here to assist you in every which way during your remaining months at SKA.

Welcome back everyone to the second half of the year and I hope that it will be filled with much academic, religious and personal growth for each and every one of our students!  I look forward to welcoming so many of our mothers and daughters at our annual Mother-Daughter Brunch sponsored by our Parent Coucil. Mazel tov to Mrs. Elisheva Kaminetsky and Mrs. Ellen Lavner, two phenomenally dedicated, talented and passionate educators!

Have a peaceful and inspiring Shabbos!
8th Graders Visit SKA

Who are those young girls in the hallway? They don't go here... Yet!
Last Thursday, over 100  eighth graders from several different schools joined SKA for an exciting presentation! The girls enjoyed "The Museum of Natural Kindness" prepared by the Junior class, during which the eleventh graders put on several different skits portraying the middah of chessed. The eighth graders then heard from a panel of our very own students and they were able to ask any questions they had about SKA and the transition from middle school to high school. The day continued with a scrumptious pizza lunch with complimentary SKA headbands for all! To conclude their fun-filled day, the eighth grade students were led on tours around the school and sat in on model math, science, Tanach, and dance classes. We look forward to seeing many of you next September!
Let's Make A Deal!!

On the first Tuesday after vacation, the G.O. gave the students of SKA a little taste of Purim! Everyone dressed in their craziest clothes and enjoyed an exciting game of "Let's Make a Deal." As the bell rang, everyone shuffled into the auditorium and the excitement was contagious.  Girls won gifts ranging from a box of band-aids to free muffins! Nobody wanted the game to end, and even as students returned to class there were still more prizes and treats being handed out! LMAD was a huge success in SKA!

Blacout Breakout

Was there a blackout in SKA?

No, but students ARE saying their Brachot Loud and Clear!  The BLACout team broke out this year's program with a stimulating brachot challenge via a slideshow presentation. The girls enjoyed an extensive buffet of snacks during which they were able to make
Brachot Loud And Clear! The excitement continued on Monday as girls were encouraged to take a quick brachot quiz during lunch so they could be entered into a raffle to win a free salad!  A special thanks to Mrs. Gross, the BLACout initiators (Esti Chesner, Gratzia
Rose, and Rachel Rose), and the other BLACout representatives for raising brachot awareness throughout the school!
Getting All Learners Involved; SKA/DRS In-Service Day

On January 12, teachers of both SKA and DRS joined together at the annual
Faculty In-Service Day to hear from Dr. Bob Greenleaf, who specializes in educational strategies for understanding behaviors, learning differences, and building self-esteem and achievement.   The faculty of both schools greatly enjoyed hearing Dr. Greenleaf's presentation, "How can we get all learners to participate?" which was supported by current brain-based research studies.  This was a wonderful opportunity for professional development as well as ensuring quality learning experiences for the students of both SKA and DRS.
Halacha Meets Physics

On Monday, February 8th, Rabbi Rothman's tenth grade Halacha class was fortunate to hear from SKA's physics teacher, Rabbi David.  Rabbi David spoke about the scientific aspect of the Av Melacha Hav'ara.  He also explained the idea and rules behind allowing electrical lights to be used as Shabbos candles when a fire is unavailable. The girls were
able to see the color spectrums from an actual fire and an incandescent light bulb. They came to the conclusion that incandescent light bulbs could be used as Shabbos candles but flurescent light bulbs could not be used.  Rabbi David's fun and interesting demonstration enabled the class to realize how science and Halacha work hand in hand.  A special thanks to Rabbi David and Rabbi Rothman for providing the students with such a great, eye-opening experience!

TLN learning Experience at Stern College

SKA sent a bus full of eager to learn girls on Thurday night to the TLN (Torah Learning Night) at Stern College. The girls enjoyed an extensive buffet of  Carlos and Gabby's for dinner and then split up into two groups for learning. Both groups learned with madrichot prior to splitting up into the two shiurim: One was given by Rebbetzin Rozensweig on "Devora HaNeviah" and the other was given by Mrs. Lebowitz on the topic of "Yosef and his Granddaughters."
SKA Reunion Times 2

On January 4th, the class of '09 had a reunion at Michlala with Mrs. Spirn and Mrs. Ralbag.  It was great to see so many familiar faces and to see how much everyone is enjoying the wonderful opportunity to be in Eretz Yisroel for the year.  After a pizza dinner, we watched a slideshow filled with warm wishes from the faculty at SKA.  It was great to "see" you!  In addition to the reunion, every girl had an
individual meeting with Mrs. Spirn or Mrs. Ralbag.  It was so nice that they took time to meet and check up with every girl on a personal level.

Reunion #2 was with Dr. Meier and Mrs. Kobre.  It was great to see them and the highlight of the evening was watching the SKA Production! Even without us as heads, you all managed to put on an amazing performance!  Thank you to Mrs. Spirn, Dr. Meier, Mrs. Kobre, and Mrs. Ralbag for taking time out of your busy schedules to be with us.  It was great to be part of the SKA family again and
we can't wait to come back and visit.

Ivrit On A Whole New Level

The ninth grade girls in Morah Antman's Ivrit class had the opportunity to learn about Rav Aryeh Levine, one of the 36 Tzdikim of his generation, through watching a video on an Israeli website.  The girls were able to learn about what a Tzadik the poor man was who gave up everything he had to others. He loved everyone and gave up his life to visit and help people who were sick or in jail.  The video interviewed a woman who he visited in jail, a student of his Rav Grossman, and Rav Simcha Raz who wrote a biography on Rav Levine.  Each of them had a chance to share their experiences with Rav Levine for all of the girls to learn from.  Not only did this teach the class about Rav Levine, but it also helped them learn Ivrit but listening to the people on the video talk in Hebrew.  We were able to keep pausing the video whenever we wanted to read the subtitles, discuss it or take notes to enrich the learning.  All of the girls really enjoyed this experience.  Thanks to Morah Antman for giving the Ninth graders this opportunity.
College Bowl Competition

Buzzzzz! The SKA College Bowl Team buzzed away at Shalhevet High School for Girls, conveying their vast knowledge of worldly subjects. The students played against three other teams, and we are so proud of their accomplishments! Congratulations and "A" for Effort!  Thank you, Mr. Fiedler!
Math Meet

Kudos to the SKA Math Team for displaying a tremendous amount of talent and skill at the DRS Math Meet! Thank you, Mrs. Budne!  Good luck next week, girls! We're rooting for you!
Sports Update

It's been a while since the SKAthletic teams have been active, but these first few days back have been full of victories! Congratulations to the SKA Basketball Team on winning their game on Sunday against Shulamith High School! Also, kudos to the Varsity Volleyball Team for winning their game against Magen David. As if this weren't enough, the JV Volleyball Team brought home two wins: one against HAFTR and the other against Ramaz! We look forward to seeing the SKA Hockey Team in action soon!
G.O. Corner

Vacation was great but it's even greater to be back.  The G.O.  kicked off the first Tuesday back with an exciting game of  "Let's Make a Deal" and the enthusiasm certainly kept everyone on their feet!  With Roth Chodesh Adar  in the air, the G.O. is excited to bring the students of SKA a month full of fun and games!
