A Message from Mrs. Spirn

It was so wonderful to welcome so many of our 9th grade dads this morning for our 3rd annual Father Daughter Breakfast. We enjoyed having a minyan here this morning, an unusual event at SKA!  How special it was to see fathers and daughters learn Torah together, especially on December 25th, and to bond throughout the morning.  CLICK HERE to see all the pictures!

We had an amazing week of Chanukah programs and activities!  Special thanks to Rabbi Zak and Mrs. Storch for creating so many wonderful experiences and outings.  My personal favorite was our first full school Big Sister Little Sister program matching 9th and 11th graders as well as 10th and 12th graders!  What energy!  What fun! I look forward to these relationships blossoming over the months and years ahead.

Production fever is definitely in the air and it was exciting to have our first official "run through" last night!  I can't believe that the number of  this year's cast and crew is almost 200 students.  I look forward to all of our rehearsals next week as our students perfect their performances before their big weekend.  Choir, musical drama, sign language, dances, ensemble, comedy skit and band.......Our students are amazingly talented and they can't wait to share it with their moms and grandmothers next Motzai Shabbat and Sunday at our three performances!  Saturday night is already sold out, but we still have tickets available for Sunday!

Mazel tov to our Debating Team on their strong performance this week, winning 5 out of their 8 debates.  Kudos to Miriam Pearl Klahr and Elana Schreier on being designated 2nd place team, to Devora Najjar and Ayelet Roller on winning both their debates and to Rachel Lunzer and Rena Kirsch for winning theirs.  Special thanks to Coach Mrs. Schwarzmer.

Mazel tov to staff members: Rivkah (Rosenblatt) Bernstein on her marriage and Mrs. Tamar Bindiger on her daughter Ayala's upcoming wedding.  We bid a fond maternity leave farewell to Elyssa Gruenbaum and look forward to good news in the near future, iy"h.

Have a wonderful Shabbos and rest up!  Next week will be exhausting but exhilarating!

Father-Daughter Breakfast

What a wonderful way for fathers to spend their day off! SKA Freshmen and their fathers joined for a beautiful father-daughter breakfast during which they learned, ate, and played games together. Following an inspiring d'var Torah by Tova Hammer and a shiur on havdalah  by Rabbi Eisenbach  ,  the girls played Jeopardy with their dads. The ninth graders also took pictures with their fathers which were later placed in frames accompanied by birkas habanim. Special thanks to all of the fathers who took time out of their busy schedules to participate in this beautiful morning!

Chanukah Chagiga and Tzedaka Auction

On December 17, the sixth day of Chanukah, the entire school gathered for the greatly anticipated Chanukah Chagigah and Auction! The program included awesome dancing to music by Azamra DJ, followed by the annual auction. Throughout the week, the girls bought individual and class tickets and each student chose the prizes she wanted to win.   The girls were so happy to hear the winners of the amazing prizes supplied by teachers, fellow students, and local stores. All money raised - totaling over $3600 - went to tzedaka. Thank you to Rabbi Zak and the G.O. for organizing and making the Chagigah/Auction so much fun!

Ace of Cakes

On December 21st,140 SKA students participated in "Ace of Cakes," an after school event coordinated by the NCSY Jump Club.  The program ,which  was run in conjunction with the Jump Club's "The Apprentice"- a multi-school competition, was a  fundraiser for NCSY. The students decorated  cakes which were then donated to those in need.  Teams included five to six girls and the competition was simple: Decorate the cake in a creative, neat, and clean fashion. Each team spent the evening creating a theme, selecting their designs, choosing colors, selecting frosting, chips and  sprinkles and decorating the cakes.    At the end of the evening, the panel of judges made up of NCSY and SKA  staff members  chose the winning cake!  A special thanks to Elissa Schertz, advisor of the NCSY club, for coordinating this fantastic event!

Big Sister/Little Sister Chanukah Outing

Who's your sister? This was the common question circulating the halls of SKA last week as the younger classmen were paired up with upper classmen to serve as "big sisters." In honor of Chanukah, the pairs of sisters roller skated together and enjoyed Dunkin Donuts with each other. Special thanks to all of the girls who worked on pairing up the sisters and Rabbi Zak and his team for arranging the special Chanukah outing.

Cafe Delight

What!? SKA's now a café!? Yes. On Friday December 18, the students of SKA and the visiting eighth graders had the opportunity to shop for baked goods, fruit, and drinks at "Café DeLIGHT." The G.O. organized Café Delight in honor of the "Festival of Lights" and made room 110 into a true café. From hot chocolate with whipped cream to delectable treats, the atmosphere truly felt café-style!

Chanukah Program for HALB Eighth Grade

Last Friday, the seventh day of Chanukah, the HALB graders came to visit SKA.  The visitors were divided  into groups with the ninth graders and played a fun, exciting, and competitive game of "Panoply."  After bonding with the Freshmen, the eighth grade students were treated to "Cafe Delight,"a Chanukah treat set up by the G.O. with coffee, hot chocolate and an assortment of cakes and muffins. We hope that the girls enjoyed their day at SKA and we look forward to welcoming them in the future!

DID U SAY CHAGIGAH?

On Tuesday and Wednesday nights of Chanukah, Mrs. Shmulewitz invited  her 10th and 11th grade students to her home for grade Chanukah  chagigahs. Lots of food, fun, and singing left the girls feeling happy and inspired,  having greatly enjoyed the time to bond and celebrate the chag! A special thanks to Mrs. Shmulewitz for hosting the girls in celebration of Chanukah!

Gymnasia

How fortunate were the Seniors to go not once, but twice to Gymnasia this year! The twelfth graders returned to Gymnasia last week to celebrate Chanukah and  teach the students about the holiday in a fun, animated manner. The girls taught the Gymnasia students about the basics of Chanukah, played Taboo with them  ,Chanukah style ,  did projects and sang songs. A special thanks to Penina Phillips and Rachel Ehrlich for compiling the booklets and to Mrs. Kobre, Mrs. Ralbag, and Mrs. Schwartzmer for accompanying the girls on their trip.

Senior Tefillah Chagigit in Honor of Chanukah

In celebration of Rosh Chodesh Tevet and Chanukah, the Seniors enjoyed a beautiful Tefilah Chagigit with  their mothers. The program was planned to internalize the middah of Tefillah,   as part of the Moreshet Aviva program.  The presentation included a beautiful slideshow prepared by fellow students Miriam Khukhashvili, Aliza Gordon, Rebecca Najjar, and Dina Eghbali and an inspiring  d'var  Torah presented  by Tova Kutner. The girls and the visiting mothers then  enjoyed a continental breakfast  and mingling! We look forward to welcoming mothers to join us again  for tefillah in the future.

11th Graders Prepare for Chanukah Bake Sale

During Chanukah, the 11th graders  divided   into four  groups,  each group baking different treats to be sold at Production. All of the money that will be  collected will be given to JEP (Jewish Education Program); a program which provides elementary school children who lack a strong Jewish education with the opportunity to learn with Yeshiva students. The Yeshiva students teach the children basic Judaic studies, such as the aleph bet, chagim, parsha, brachot, and more. Special thanks to Mrs. Spirn, Mrs. Kaminetsky, Mrs. Storch, and Mrs. Joseph for opening their kitchens to  the 11th graders  for baking!

Earth Class Celebrates Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice occurs exactly when the earth's axial tilt is farthest away from the sun at its maximum of 23° 26'. Although this fact seems confusing to many of us, the AP Environmental and Earth Science students learned about the Winter Solstice and understand this phenomenon. In honor of Winter Solstice, the girls in AP Environmental and Earth dressed in black and white to depict the change in light/dark outside at this time.

Senior Interviews

The Seniors are approaching the end of interview season, but this week was host to several more schools visiting and interviewing. Students interviewed with Midreshet Moriah, Darchei Bina, Migdal Oz, Bnot Torah, Midreshet Tehilla and  Emunah V'Omanut. Continued hatzlacha to everyone  Only a few more to go !

SKAbulary Dress Up Contest

Each Friday, Ms. Statman's ninth and eleventh grade students celebrate the "SKAbulary word of the week" by dressing up according to  the definition of the designated word. Last week , the word was " cherubic." Thank you for providing the rest of the school with the opportunity to learn new words and visualize the words every erev shabbos! Can't wait for the next word!

Debate

Congratulations to the SKA debate team for a job well done at HAFTR this week. We are so proud of Miriam Pearl Klahr and Elana Schreier who have brought home the award for "Second Best Partnership." Special thanks to Mrs. Schwartzmer for coaching the girls, and to Libi Ben-Tzvi, Rachel Duftler, and Leah Goodman for being excellent captains!
Blood Drive

Seniors, Juniors, Teachers, and even a few Sophomores were able to participate in a "chessed she b'guf" this week as they donated blood during the annual SKA Blood Drive. Thank you to all of those who donated blood and to all of the coordinators: Penina Phillips, Nina Mehlman, Rachel Krasner, Sharoni Ozeri, Sarah Kaszovitz, Jordana Mael, Aliza Maslow, and Rachel Zehnwirth.

Senior Seminar

The Seniors were in for a treat this week at Senior Seminar! The students played "The Game of Life" this week, during which they read about various real-life scenarios. Students were divided intro groups and each was led by a facilitator who helped the girls debate each scenario so they could decide which choice to make. It was truly eye-opening and perfect for the Senior class who is amidst a time of major decision making.
J.O.H. Breakout!!

What's J.O.H.??? The Just One Hour (J.O.H.) program is an annual program presented by the SHAC team. The program states that for one hour each day, girls will be extra careful to refrain from speaking lashon hara. The breakout included a short video and a "Talk-a-Lot" performance by Tova Hammer.
Sports Update

Congratulations to the JV Volleyball Team for beating Central this week! The girls played a fantastic game and we are so proud of their victory.  Also, kudos to the SKA Basketball Team for beating Bruriah, the only other (previously) undefeated team in the league!
