A Message from Mrs. Spirn

Parent Teacher Conferences, Internet Awareness Programs for 9th Grade students and parents, after school Open Beit Midrash, a play focusing on Spousal Abuse, Torah Bowl victory ,Production rehearsals, Physics Shabbaton, Moreshet Aviva melave malka for Seniors, Volleyball and Basketball games.....just a sampling of our co-curricular learning and fun actiivites before Chanukah.
Chanukah week will certainly be exciting will all of the extra activities planned by Rabbi Zak and our amazing G.O.  I personally can't wait for our Chagiga and yearly Tzedaka auction!  Big Sister-Little Sister programs for all of our grades will also be a highlight!  But I don't want to share everything,,,,some things need to be a surprise!
I want to wish all the members of our SKA family a "freilichen Chanukah" where we can all appreciate the nissim performed by Hashem in the days of Antiochos and of course, in our daily lives.  May we be zocheh to recognize the power of Hakadosh Baruch Hu in all aspects of our lives and in our relationships with family and friends.  May we all enjoy the long weekend with the special people in our lives!
Shabbat Shalom!  Chag Urim Sameach!

Dear 8th Graders,
We are enjoying seeing so many of you at your interviews and Parlor Meetings!  We can't believe that we are almost finished!
We wish you all a wonderful Chanukah as we all celebrate the miracles of Hashem! Happy Chanukah!
Mrs. Spirn and Rabbi Rothman
Flowers Are Not Enough!

The Seniors had the unique experience this week to attend a one-woman show performed by Mrs. Nomi Ackerman on the topic of domestic abuse and the effects it can have on one person. The play demonstrated the signs   to look out for, in addition to ways to get help or treatment if in this situation. A special thanks to Mrs. Ackerman for her great acting abilities and for talking with the girls after the show in a question-answer period

Two World Renowned Speakers Come to SKA

SKA was privileged to host Rabbi Orlofsky and Mrs Shira Smiles , both  world renowned speakers  and teachers at Darchei Bina.

Rabbi Orlofsky spoke to the Juniors and Seniors about Chanukah and the significance of the dreidel. With hysterically funny stories and beautiful words of Torah, Rabbi Orlofsky truly captivated the audience ! A special thanks to Rabbi Orlofsky for his inspiring words and for creatingmuch  excitement and  anticipation for the upcoming chag.

Mrs. Shira Smiles spoke about Chanukah  to the mothers as part of the Lilmod Ule'lam ed program and  to the Seniors as part of the Senior Seminar. She then spent time with the faculty, presenting practical ways of  involving heart, mind and soul in the learning process.   A special thanks to Mrs Smiles  who taught with   humor  and  great erudition , showing tremendous  enthusiasm and love for her teaching and her students.

Thank you to Mrs. Kaminetsky and to the Darchei Bina administration   for bringing these two speakers to SKA for a special pre-Chanukah treat!

Physics Shabbaton

Shall we play broken telephone? Ready? Go! Physics Shabbaton!

This past Shabbos, the Seniors  from the Regents Physics class joined Rabbi David in his hometown of West Hempstead for an amazing Shabbos. Friday night dinner was hosted by fellow student Penina Schneider and her family and the meal was beautiful. Not only did the food and words of Torah make it amazing, but the students also had the opportunity speak with older girls about  Israel schools and college.   Lunch was at Tova Kutner's grandmother's house  and it was a chance to spend a relaxed  meal with just the students and Rabbi David and his lovely wife.  Shabbos ended on a real high with Shalosh Seudot at the David home. We sang some zmiros, solved some Jewish Parsha puzzles  and of course, ate.

We would like to extend tremendous gratitude on behalf of the entire class to all the hosts for the meals and sleeping arrangements , to all the mothers who helped supply the food, and to the heads, both student and parents, who helped to organize every little detail that made this Physics Shabbaton such a major success. We would of course like to thank Rabbi and Mrs. David   for this special Shabbos . A special haKarat HaTov to Rabbi David for spending hours everyday, teaching students the art of Physics. We're Physics nerds, but we're nerds who had an awesome Shabbos on our Physics Shabbaton!

Moreshet Aviva

The second Moreshet Aviva event of the year took place on Motzei Shabbat December 5th    in Mrs. Spirn's home to kickoff this month's middah of Tefilah. Seniors gathered to hear from a "special surprise speaker," Mr. Butler, husband of our very own Mrs. Shani Butler, who spoke about the importance of a makom kavuah when davening. Afterwards, the girls enjoyed delicious ice cream, along with a fun game of SKAJeopardy prepared by the Moreshet Aviva Vaad. The Seniors are looking forward to more inspiring and engaging Moreshet Aviva events in the coming months!

Special thanks to Mrs. Spirn for opening up her home and the delicious chocolate chip cookies, and to Mrs. Kobre and   Mrs. Ralbag  for coordinating this event! May the neshama of Aviva Aryeh a"h have an aliyah in the zechut of the Seniors' learning.

Yearbook Club Pictures

"Can all the people in You've Got Mail come to the auditorium"?
"All members of [Insert Team/ Club] please go to the auditorium."

This past Wednesday, Yearbook had their annual Club Picture Day.   Art Photographers came to school and took pictures of all the various clubs, extra-curricular groups and teams that SKA offers. In addition, each grade took a grade picture and the Seniors had an opportunity to "create" clubs that reflect some of their grade jokes. Never before have the words "can all of the members of NCSY vs. Yachad" been uttered over the loudspeaker, even by Rabbi Zak. It was really amazing to see everyone all dressed up with their props and costumes for the various pictures.

Thank you to the Yearbook Editors in Chief, Emily Feldman and Penina Wein, for organizing the entire day. A special thanks to the teachers for being so understanding when it came to letting some girls leave class.  Most of all, thank you to Elyssa for all the announcements she made throughout the day.

Chanukah Toy Drive

With the excitement of Chanukah mounting in the hallways of SKA, what better way to prepare for the chag than doing a mitzvah? The students of SKA have been bringing in  different kinds of toys to help benefit the Chai Lifeline Toy Drive. A special thanks to all the girls who brought in toys! Also, thanks to Mrs. Storch and  Tova Kutner  for coordinating the drive! Chag Sameach and Tizku L'Mitzvos!
Inter-Generational Day

SKA was delighted to welcome the residents of the Woodmere Rehabilitation Center to SKA  on  Inter-generational Day. The girls played numerous dreidel  games   with the residents and helped them design their own dreidels to take back to the nursing home. Throughout the program, there was cheerful Chanukah music and delicious donuts to eat. This event was a great opportunity to do chesed and an excellent chance to bond with the elderly. To these residents, a few minutes of our time is worth all the Chanukah Gelt in the world! A special thanks to Aliza Gordon, Lisa Klein and Mrs. Segal for coordinating this program.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

The first SKA Parent Teacher Conferences of the year took place on  Monday night, December 7th and Wednesday night, December 9th. This was the first year that SKA  held a "two night" Parent Teacher  Conference in order to accommodate the many parents who wished to meet the teachers. Parents signed up for the six minute meetings by using an automated system which allowed them to have compact schedules and meet with teachers in a timely manner.

The evening focused on communication between parents and teachers to better help our girls  grow and reach their potential. We look forward to a continued exchange of ideas and partnering in the further development and growth of our students.
SHAC Yom Iyun

SHAC (Shmiras Halashon Action Committee), accompanied by a few other students from SKA participated in the annual SHAC Yom Iyun at Ohr Naava. The girls gathered with students from many other schools and enjoyed hearing from Mrs. Jackie Bitton, an SKA graduate. Special thanks to Mrs. Jacobs for organizing this event and and to Rena Thalheim for accompanying the girls on their trip.

Internet Awareness

When it comes to the Internet, safety is the number one priority. The Internet Awareness Program introduces the Freshmen to the dangers of the Internet and the precautions that should be taken. Two Nassau County police officers came to SKA to s hare their experiences and stories regarding Internet safety. The Ninth Grade parents  of both SKA and DRS also attended this program in the evening so that  students and parents alike learned of the benefits of the Internet as well as the precautions that must be taken to keep the Internet a safe and beneficial place. A special thanks to Mrs. Ilana Keehn for coordinating this evening.

Israel Schools/Colleges Interview Seniors

The Senior hallway continued to be filled with buzz and excitement as many of the twelfth graders were interviewed this week. Shaalvim, MMY, Lindenbaum, Baer Miriam /Maayanot, Tiferet, Nishmat, AMIT and Stern College held interviews   and MMY and Michlalah administered entrance exams to all of their applicants. We wish the Seniors continued hatzlacha with all of their interviews - we know they'll do a great job!
Torah Bowl Competition
Mazel tov to the SKA Torah Bowl Team upon winning all four matches at their meet! The girls played beautifully as they buzzed away, walking out with a sense of accomplishment and with more Torah knowledge under their belts!
Sports Update

What an exciting SKAthletic week at SKA! The Basketball Team, after winning two out of two games these past two weeks, is on an absolute high! Both games were extremely well-played and very close, with SKA winning each one by only a few points. The Varsity Volleyball Team also made SKA proud with bringing home three wins this week against Bruriah and Ma'ayanot (2 wins)! We know that our Varsity girls don't get their skill from nowhere - our JV Volleyball Team also played extremely well this week, and SKA could not be prouder! Go Teams!!
