A Message from Mrs. Spirn
|

What a personal "beracha" it was for me to watch over 190 of my students display their collective, individual and diverse talents at Hewlett High School this past weekend! They were truly awesome! I was completely spellbound by our students' performances! Our stirring choir, our multi-talented musical drama cast, our agile and graceful dancers, our skilled sign language interpreters, our stupendous band, our humorous comedy drama cast... our behind the scenes support of curtains, props, lighting, sound, scenery, costumes, stage management, Baybill, raffles, tickets, refreshments...All of the girls shined and glowed on that stage and behind in memorable ways! I was proud of our students who were not in Production and how they came out in droves to support their fellow classmates at the performances. I know that they too will be supported by their friends in their choices of extra-curricular activities. Performing at Hewlett High School added new challenges to our preparation, rehearsals and actual performances, but so many girls rose to the occasion beautifully and I was proud of how well our large group adapted. In the end, being there truly enhanced Production 2008 and we are grateful to District 14, under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Omitani, for its sensitivity toward all students being educated within the district. Our dancers also benefited from the guidance of Mrs. Sales, dance teacher at Lawrence High School in District 15. Our collaboration with both districts was an important milestone for our school and community and we are deeply appreciative of their efforts on our behalf. To our students: Please accept my hakarat hatov, gratitude and appreciation for your personal role and contribution to Production 2008. All of those practices, all of those evenings, all of that work, all of that fun! It sure paid off! May you continue to use the gifts Hashem has bestowed upon you in meaningful, fulfilling, and rewarding ways! "Yevarchecha Hashem V'Yishmarecha!". May Hashem continue to "bless you" and watch over you...at SKA and beyond!
It was so special to welcome our Freshman fathers this past week for our 2nd Annual Father Daughter Breakfast. It was wonderful having you all with us and watching you bond with your daughters through learning and fun.
Special mazal tov to 12th graders Sarah Schnoll on her early action acceptances to both MIT and Cooper Union; Julie Stahler on her acceptance to Cooper Union and Adi Fried on her acceptance to Brandeis. We are excited to see the realization of your dreams for the future.
I will miss you all next week when I am in Israel visiting our graduates! I hope you enjoy our Career Day Yom Iyun on January 1st!
May you all have a gutten chodesh and freilichen Chanukah vacation!

| PRODUCTION 2008!! |
|
This year, it was different. This year, the SKA Annual Production which took place on motzei Shabbat , December 19th and Sunday December 20th, was held at the Hewlett High School Auditorium. And that change of venue made all the difference! A professional stage, professional lighting and the SKA "professional band" supported the magnificent cast in their songs, dances, and drama about BRACHOT! The students performed to a packed house of close to 1,000 moms, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, teachers, friends and alumnae. The voices of the Choir were strong and beautiful as they sang, amongst other songs, Yaf Yafita and Shuva Hashem. The dances were sharp as they depicted the bracha of "Freedom" with orange jail outfits, the bracha of "Rain" with yellow umbrellas and yellow sweatshirts, the bracha of our "Body Parts" in a sea of black, red and white, the bracha of "Imagination" with dancers as puppets and the bracha of Techiyas haMeisim in black and white. The white hands of the signers shone in the dark .The musical drama and ensemble about a Bracha Bee were very creative and the comedy drama about the bracha of "Family" was fun to watch. Even the Drama Heads and Choir Heads got into the act with their own presentations. What pride we all had in our students! And what delight they had in themselves as over 190 students gathered on the stage for a final curtain call to the thunderous applause of the audience! Thank you to the actresses, the dancers, the singers, the narrators, the signers, the backstage and tech team, the band, the ticket sellers, the usherettes, the Baybill staff and the Heads . Thank you to Mrs. Libin for the artistic touches and costumes, to Mrs. Bowe for the Sign Language direction and to Mrs. Sova for working with the dancers. Thank you to the many teachers who stayed long nights to help with the back stage details: to Miss Aeder who coordinated backstage and to Mrs. Antman, Mrs. Bindiger, Mrs. Budne, Miss Chambre, Mrs. Mirsky, Mrs. Pomerantz, Mrs. Ralbag, Mrs. Sachs, and Dr. Meier and to the madrichot who helped, Lisa Ogorek and Jordana Werthheimer A million thanks to Mrs. Terri Wagner, the director and "First Lady of SKA Theater" and to her 12th grade Production Assistants: Eliana Brecher, Rachel Klein and Jordana Wernick who took care of every detail with grace and efficiency. Thank you to District 14 and Hewlett High School for this breakthrough collaborative effort and to the wonderful staff at Hewlett High School who coached the girls as to the best lighting, cues and stage positioning ,enabling our SKA cast to shine on their stage. Finally, a tremendous thanks to Mrs. Spirn and Rabbi Zak who made this all happen. Girls, you did it again!! Auditions for Production 2009 will start soon! Details to follow! Can't wait!

Chanukah Chagigah: 8th Grade and 9th Grade Bonding
|
On December 23rd, the incoming freshmen from HALB came to join the current freshmen in SKA for an exciting Chanuka Chagiga. The girls bonded, as each freshman was paired with an 8th grader and together entered a cookie decorating contest. Of course, the decorated Chanukah cookies were often eaten before they could be judged. The girls danced in concentric circles to Chanukah music, watched the Simon Sez show with the other grades and then ate a delicious lunch of pizza and fries. Welcome to the 8th graders!!!

Father- Daughter Breakfast
|
|
Fathers at SKA???? Not a usual sight !! Yet on Thursday, December 25, the freshmen welcomed their fathers to SKA. The fathers davened shacharit in SKA, and then met their daughters afterwards for breakfast in the auditorium. Following breakfast, Shana Prince and Dana Weinstein gave an inspiring dvar Torah about Chanukah and its nisim. The girls and their dads learned some sources together and then enjoyed a shiur from Rabbi Eisenbach on kibud av v'em. They played Jeopardy in various classrooms and were given a Chanukah gift : a picture of each dad with his daughter and a special tefilla. It was so nice having the dads join the girls for the day !! ! It was like "bring your dad to work day!"

| Early Decisions |
Several SKA seniors decided to apply to college under the early action or early decision plan. Applications had to be submitted by early November and the colleges made their decisions by the mid December. Under the early action plan, a student need not attend the school; under the early decision plan, a student is committed to the school that accepts her. Mazal Tov to Adi Fried who was accepted early decision to Brandeis. Mazal Tov to Sarah Schnoll who was accepted early action to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) - an SKA first!! Mazal Tov to Sarah Schnoll and Julie Stahler who were accepted early decision to The Cooper Union. We are so proud of you and wish you much hatzlacha in your college experience!! |
| Irving and Tony Rosen Program Featuring the David Project |
The Irving and Toni Rosen Israel Programs and Studies sponsored a very interesting program this week in conjunction with the David Project.
An informative documentary was shown depicting the predicament of the Forgotten Refugees. When the State of Israel was established, these Edot ha Mizrahi Jews were exiled en masse from the Arab countries which had been their homelands for generations and were persecuted in many ways. They later reestablished themselves in a new culture, country, and language, often in Israel. But they wanted their stories to be heard after being silenced for so long, noting that their families and friends had often been discriminated against and at times killed, yet the world was silent .
This video helped broaden the students' understanding and knowledge of Jewish people all over the world. We also understood how Jewish exiles were absorbed by Israel in its infancy and how Jews chose to leave the refugee camps which were only temporary. The contrast with Arab governments and the Palestinian refugee camps is startling and disturbing.
Special thanks to Sara Davis from the David Project! We were moved that a non-Jewish woman has chosen to work this Israel advocacy group and present this film to our school and many other groups.

Chanukah Simon Sez |
"Simon Sez, put your hands on your head! Simon Sez, rub your tummy!" Who knew that there was a deeper lesson to be learned through playing this game? Steve Max came into the SKA auditorium on Tuesday, December 23rd to kick off our annual Chanukah Chagigah. He taught us about showing respect and the importance of being a good listener. Watching our teachers and friends fight to be "Simon Sez Champions" was definitely fun and entertaining. Following the Simon Sez game, was our usual ruach-filled Chanuka Chagiga, ending with delicious sufganiot (jelly filled donuts) !! Written by Talia Margulies & Naomi Weiss

Chanukah Auction and Bingo |
|

The Chanukah auction is a tradition at SKA. And as usual, it was a great success! But this year, there was a change. Because of the economic downturn, there was a Chinese Auction rather than a standard bidding auction. And yet, SKA still managed to raise over $4,000 for tzedaka for Simchat Tzion; we will have the zechut of sponsoring a wedding in Israel! Teachers and students offered many different prizes and the air was filled with excitement and suspense as Rabbi Zak and the G.O. called up the winners to the various raffles. At the same time, a Bingo game was played by the students and there was much excitement as the students struggled to win the stylish hats that were distributed after winning bingo, Chanukah style! The auction and latkes (and two periods off) were great Chanukah treats for everyone!

Chanukah with Otzar |
In celebration of Chanukah, the 11th grade was privileged to spend time with the adults from Otzar. They made creative art projects and enjoyed acting in an entertaining skit about Chanukah. Afterwards, the Otzar members enjoyed a delicious lunch and dancing with the Juniors. A special thanks to Mrs. Shmulewitz, Ms. Aeder, Ms. Chambre and Mrs. Sova for coordinating such a fun-filled event!
Special thanks to Mrs. Jaclyn Sova who hosted a beautiful Chanukah Chagiga at her home for her 11-3 and 11-4 Navi classes. The girls were busy baking and playing with Mrs. Sova's adorable baby and a great time was had by all!

| OT Trip to Firehouse |
|
This past Wednesday, the 12th grade Occupational Therapy elective class went on a trip to the Lawrence Cedarhurst Fire Department. They had learned about work hardening, which is a treatment program in which therapists help injured patients return to their work place. Through activities, the OT restores the physical abilities needed in the person's occupation. The students went to see first hand which components of being a fireman would be impaired, if G-d forbid one of the volunteers was injured. On this trip the students were able to see all of the physical requirements of the job of a firefighter. After trying on the heavy equipment, climbing up the ladders, crawling, and carrying the hoses, they saw just how hard it really was! They were even able to tour the fire truck and of course, take lots of pictures. It was a great trip, and a wonderful learning experience for all. Thanks to Mrs. Isaacs, the OT teacher, for organizing this event!

| Moreshes Aviva: Majesty of Modesty |
|
On the Wednesday of Chanukah, the Senior class looked like very pretty Princesses. With their shiny, self-decorated crowns and huge smiles, the twelfth grade, under the direction of their GLA's, Mrs. Kobre and Mrs. Ralbag, enjoyed a special Chanukah lunch and Moreshet Aviva program. Ice cream and homemade brownies were served, festive music was played, and the girls had a great time hanging out with each other and their teachers. The decorated crowns were made in order to teach the girls the importance of the 'Majesty of Modesty.' The message was that all Jewish girls are the daughters of a King, Hashem, and have to dress and act as such. After the past few extremely busy weeks (Production, Israel applications and interviews.......) it was nice to sit back, relax and act like Princesses!!!!

| The10th Grade Visits an Amen Group |
|
On Wednesday morning, the third day of Chanukah, the tenth grade went to daven with the "Amen" group. The "Amen" group is a group of women who daven together each morning, says brachot out loud as everyone answers amen, and hears inspiring words from one another. With a beautiful Hallel, and some incredible Chanukah thoughts, it was a great way to start off our day. The trip was one of the many components of the Sophomores' new BLACout Program - Be Loud and Clear. The goal is to improve in our brachot, while being loud and clear so everyone has the ability to say amen! A special thanks to our wonderful BLACout heads: Gratzia, Rachel, and Esti, and to our GLA's Mrs. Gross and Mrs. Jacobs for making this trip possible!

| 10th Grade Class Visits Nursing Home |
|
Mrs. Leibtag's 10th grade Global class went to the Woodmere Nursing Home to dance and sing with the senior citizens at their Chanukah Chagiga! It was a great experience to see the happy smiles on all of their faces. The senior citizens enjoyed the girls' company and the girls enjoyed being there with the seniors. The Sophomores gave the members dreidels and donuts, lighting up their faces and making the members' Chanukah really spectacular. It was a great SKAmazing experience!

| Chemistry Classes Enjoy Winter Fun |
The 11th Grade Basic Chemistry Class with Mrs. Glatt took an opportunity this week to learn about the structure of snow. The snowstorm allowed this unique class to learn about why snow forms such pretty flakes, why ice floats, and, of course, to put their knowledge to good use by building a mini-snowman! This class learns about the practical applications of chemistry, having just completed units about the chemistry of cosmetics and the chemistry of food. The students focus on hands-on chemistry, so they spend a lot of time in the lab experiencing the life of a chemist. So the next time you want to know which is the best moisturizer, how to make soap, what the safest way is to get a fake tan, and how to make invisible ink appear, (and why they all work,) consult your local 11th grade chemists! Meanwhile, Mrs. Glatt's 10-2 chemistry class enjoyed their own special "West Hempstead Shabbaton" organized by the students. Enjoying yummy Shabbos food, dvrei Torah (which, of course, connected to Chemistry), and a fun-filled Shabbos afternoon game (including plenty of Chemistry references!), the girls really got to experience a special Shabbos treat. The class got a chance to really "bond" in a warm environment. Special thanks to the Siegel and Schneider families for hosting us! |
| Chanukah Party at Mrs. Kaminetsky's Home |
On Tuesday, December 23rd, Mrs. Kaminetsky's Junior Chumash class enjoyed a beautiful Chanukah party at the Kaminetsky home. The girls enjoyed a delicious dinner, followed by divrei Torah from classmate Shayna Nordlicht and Mrs. Kaminetsky. After dinner, the students gathered together and played a fun-filled game of Jeopardy, SKA Chanukah style! The topics included SKA, Juniors, Chanukah, and Tanach. A special thanks to madrichot Michal and Atara, Mrs. Lavner, and Mrs. Shmulewitz for joining in the celebration! Thank you to Mrs. Kaminetsky for opening her home and providing her class with such a beautiful evening!
