A Message from Mrs. Spirn
|

Baruch Hashem, we have completed our 16th year of studies at SKA! We have granted diplomas to 90 Seniors (Our largest group yet, kain yirbu!) at a beautiful graduation ceremony and had the opportunity to speak about each graduate in a meaningful way at our Senior Night. We are proud that members of the Class of 2009 have been accepted to the finest colleges and seminaries of their choice. We are thrilled that 95% of our graduating class will spend the year learning Torah in Eretz Yisrael. Ki miTzion tatzai Torah udvar Hashem miYerushalayim....
We have watched 310 students successfully complete Regents and final examinations in many subject areas. We have seen a large number of our students opt to take AP exams to enrich their learning and qualify for college credit. We have seen our students receive awards and recognition in many disciplines and are proud of our seniors receiving academic scholarships to various institutions.
We have been zocheh to help the larger community through our students' acts of chesed and the fulfillment of more than 12,000 hours of their collective chesed responsibilities. We have seen a new playground built in Sderot after a successful Walkathon last year that drew close to a thousand people of all ages. We sponsored an entire wedding in Yerushalayim for a yesoma through Ezer Mi'tzion. We have supported many institutions and offered respite to many families through both our Chesed projects and our Senior Work Study Internship program and have watched our students develop their personal interests and talents.
We have been zocheh to inculcate in our students a deeper understanding, knowledge and love of Eretz Yisrael through our Irving and Toni Israel Studies and Programs and the David Project and are excited about our new course on the History of Israel that we introduced this year. We were honored to introducing a Teacher Training and Internship program this year and we are proud that 2 of the 3 teachers in the program will be joining our faculty this September, iy"h.
We are fortunate to work with a great Parent Council under the leadership of Yocheved Goldberg, Carol Krauss and Heshy Schertz, who support our efforts in countless ways and hosted a beautiful Mother Daughter Brunch honoring Mrs. Tzipi Antman and Mrs. Sara Taib. We are grateful to offer educational opportunities for our moms like Lilmod Ule'lamed on Tuesdays and ongoing Community Wide Lectures for Women.
We are thrilled to welcome so many of our alumnae each week for shiurim and learning here at SKA and at Stern College. We were honored to host several reunions here in the States and in Yerushalayim and look forward to an upcoming reunion for our second and third graduating classes.
We dedicated this school year to the theme of Emet and incorporated ideas of behaving honestly and with integrity in private and in public at Shabbaton , with other occasions in between. Our GO provided many wonderful opportunities for fun, growth and reflections too, especially on the theme of Emet.
Production 2008 highlighted the musical, dance, dramatic, sign language and artistic talents of close to two thirds of our school at two performances at Hewlett High School, which were attended by over one thousand women. Shabbaton 2008 was an incredible retreat with the opportunity to bond with classmates up in the country while enjoying the experience of being part of the SKA family.
Our students produced beautiful publications which we shared with our larger community: The Looking Glass, our school newspaper; our weekly Parsha Press and seasonal Yom Tov Press; At Ptach, our Haggadah; our 9th grade Holocaust Journal; Matrix, our Literary Journal and our Yom Yerushalayim Hebrew Journal.
It has been a wonderful year of growth and accomplishment for our students. I wish all the members of our SKA family a wonderful summer and an opportunity to relax, reflect and to grow!
To my students....please remember the letters you wrote in our yearend meetings and the words of Dovid Hamelech, "Sur maira v'aseh tov!"......"Remove yourself from negativity" and be sure to perform actions that are positive and chesed oriented. If you concentrate on doing tov, removing yourself from negative influences and difficult situations won't be so hard. May you all continue to "do tov" and grow in your avodat Hashem to be the beautiful, sensitive and talented young women you are meant to be!!!
Have a wonderful summer and be sure to relax!!! |

Faculty Workshop: "Writing Across the Curriculum" |
For two days, on June 15th and 16th, the SKA faculty joined together once again to meet with Dr. John Collins , author of Improving Student Performance Through Writing and Thinking Across the Curriculum. Dr. Collins, who was the In Service presenter in January for the SKA and DRS faculties, continued to expose the teachers to different types of writing which presuppose critical thinking. Teachers became students as they were asked to summarize articles, list information they had learned and peer edit their partner's writing. This powerful workshop is part of the SKA commitment made during the Middle States Visitation to introduce writing in all classes "across the curriculum" in order to improve writing and raise the level of comprehension and achievement of our students. |

Sports Dinner
|
|
On June 1st, SKA's athletes enjoyed a beautiful Sports Dinner commemorating a fun and successful season. The evening began with a delicious Chinese dinner, followed by some inspiring words and divrei Torah from Mr. Steinmetz. The coaches of each team awarded various team members with awards such as MVP, Most Improved Player, and Rookie of the Year. We are so proud of the girls for playing so well this year, as they displayed great middos on and off the courts! Kol HaKavod to the Hockey Team for playing a great first season at SKA!

| Senior Dinner |

On Monday evening, June 8th, the Senior class enjoyed a beautiful and meaningful Senior Dinner in the White Shul. Everyone dressed up and looked stunning for the long-awaited event. After a delicious meal, the students' parents joined them for dessert and listened as the teachers spoke about each student's unique personality and how she contributed to the school. The night concluded with the presenting of awards to a select group of girls who have displayed exemplary middos or skill in academics. A special Mazel Tov to the recipients: Mazel Tov to the entire Senior class! |
Senior Trip
|
Seniors went on their exciting three-day Senior trip to Montreal. Their trip was packed with so many awesome activities that there was little time to rest! Between volleyball, tubing, watching an Imax, jet boating, horse and buggy riding, going on frightening late night ghost tours of old Montreal, shopping (of course) and much, much more there was never a dull moment. The trip ended with a beautifully inspiring and tearful Kumzitz, during which everyone sang and reflected on their high school days at SKA.

Mazal tov to Deena Miller and Penina Wein, first and second place winners in the Yeshiva University Bekius contest! This year, for the first time, six SKA students entered the Bronka Weintraub High School Bekius Contest sponsored by Yeshiva University. Girls from schools all over the United States participated in the program. Participants chose to compete in either the Amud-a-Week or Daf-a-Week contest. The Amud-a-Week participants, Esther Klapholtz, Deena Miller, Rhonda Steinmetz and Penina Wein learned the second half of Masechet Rosh Hashana and were tested five times during the year.
Deena Miller scored the highest average of all participants and received a grand prize award of $1,500. Penina Wein was the second place winner and received $1,000.
The Daf-a-Week participants, Shaindy Schiffmiller and Sarah Schnoll, learned the entire Masechet Rosh Hashana and were also tested on the material five times during the school year.
Each of the six SKA girls received seforim of their choice for their high test grades. Mazal tov to all the participants! We are proud of your achievements and your desire to learn Torah. MACs Chat
|
| After our exciting kickoff of the MACS program, MACS returned with MACS Chats!
In the various "chat rooms", girls chose to speak about specific topics in the realm of tzniut with their peers and teachers. Topics included "The Inner Meaning of Modesty," "Beyond Hemlines and Necklines," and "Maintaining My Standards." Each "chat room" drew many girls who were eager to further discuss the laws of tzniut. We look forward to many more MACS events in the coming year! By: Miriam Khukhashvili

Bio-Chem Baseball Game
|
It was Tuesday, June 2nd. The AP Bio Bombats huddled together in the Bio Lab as "The Eye of the Tiger" blasted in their "dugout." It was time. Suddenly they burst out of their dugout onto the field to face the enemy: Chemervental (AP Chemistry and AP Environmental) was waiting. At the end of two treacherous innings, Chemervental was ahead by two...and then the bell rang. Congratulations to Chemervental who won the AP Bio vs. AP Chem and Environmental softball game. Kol HaKavod to all of the players for being great sports throughout the year during their difficult AP courses! Thank you Mrs. Gross, Mrs. Berger, and Mrs. Gerlernter for refereeing and participating in the girls' game! By: Emily Feldman and Ilana Eisenberg
