Color War 2009!
|
|
Due to the tough economic
times, Middlestates' arrival early the next week, and a feeling of entitlement
felt throughout the school, Mrs. Spirn claimed that color war 2009 was
canceled. However, just one period later "Eye of the Tiger" started blaring on
the loudspeakers and we knew that after that the "Fake-out Breakout," Color War
had arrived at SKA!!
This year's theme was Emet
and it was beautifully portrayed in four different ways by the four grades. The
freshmen yellow team's theme was Emet Bein Adam Li'Chavero which they
portrayed beautifully by their tremendous Achdut. The sophomores (blue)
conveyed the importance of Emet Bein Adam Li'Makom through their devotion
and Hakarat Hatov to Hashem. The juniors, the orange team, were Emet Bein
Yisrael Li'Amim in which they displayed by their leadership and strength
for others. The Seniors, who were red, demonstrated Emet Bein Adam Li'Atzmo
with their cheers, spirit, and emphasis and self-reflection. With Gabby
Orenbach as freshmen general, Shira Stavsky as the sophomores', Aliza Gordon as
the junior general, and Naomi Weiss as the senior general, each team had a fair
chance of winning. The teams had to present a D'var Torah with a connected
PowerPoint presentation, a banner, theme song and a creative stomp. Meanwhile,
the teams participated in awesome events such as 5-Ball Soccer, See-Run-Build,
GaGa, Knee Hockey, Bananagrams, and the incredible game of Panopoly. With
puzzles, things to taste, hard questions to answer, and so much more, Panopoly
was incredibly fun. Pop culture, puzzles, food, and Israel were some examples of the random
question topics. The Ruach and intensity throughout the day and a half
were unbelievable and everyone really had a blast!
Congratulations to the Senior
Red Team for winning, and to the Sophomore Blue Team for winning second place!
A Huge thanks to Rabbi Zak, Mrs.
Storch, Elana, Mrs. Spirn and all the SKA girls for making Color War '09 the
best one yet!!

Freshmen Eating Disorders Education and Prevention Workshops
|
|

On Thursday March 12th and Tuesday March
17th, two vital workshops regarding positive body image, eating disorders and
self esteem were held for freshman and parents. The first and introductory
program for students, called "No Body's Perfect," led by FEGS educators,
involved interactive student discussion sessions focusing on stereotyping,
"weightism" and self esteem. These discussions served as an introduction and
foundation which would prepare students for the upcoming eating disorders
program. The evening program, which took place one week later, joined students
and parents together to learn about the connection between food and feelings,
the impact of societal and family pressures to be thin as well as the physical,
social and psychological effects of eating disorders.
Dr. Judith Rabinor, renowned psychologist
and clinician specializing in the identification and treatment of eating
disorders, opened the evening with a poignant media clip and guided imagery
encouraging the audience to realize the prevalence of these issues in our
community and society as a whole. Parents then watched a new film recently put
out by the OU named, "Hungry to be Heard" which describes the nature of eating
disorders in the orthodox community. The
need to consider the messages we send to one another about body image and
eating, and the importance of focusing on our internal selves rather than
anxiety over our external appearances, were key messages highlighted by Dr.
Rabinor. Mr. Lenny Kramer; a parent of
two SKA graduates, talked about his daughter's experience with an eating
disorder, and stressed the importance of good communication within families and
the ability to listen to our daughters and what they are telling us.
The students heard from Ms. Aliza
Stareshefsky who spoke of her personal
eating disorder struggle and this was followed by student groups led by FEGS
educators which allowed students to process what they had heard and connect it
to their discussions from the previous week. How to get help for oneself or a
friend and who students can go to in school was reviewed.
Mrs. Spirn and Mrs. Rochel Block, Physical
Education and Nutrition teacher were present for the duration of the program
and openly participated in the parent/panel discussion, along with Dr. Rabinor,
Mr. Lenny Kramer and Ms. Aliza Stareshefsky. Literature folders which were
packed with information mirrored the multifaceted nature and approach of this
topic and program.
Overall, the program was stimulating,
thought provoking and comprehensive for students and parents alike. It
heightened awareness, enhanced a positive and healthier approach to body image
and self esteem, and encouraged an up-front sense of candor and openness
regarding this health issue. We plan to continue following up with the students
on this topic in the weeks to come, and give the students an opportunity to
talk more during health class.

Rabbi Rietti Speaks at SKA
|
SKA SKA was privileged to have Rabbi Jonathan Rietti, a senior lecturer for Gateways, speak on the topic of "Lashon Hakodesh- The DNA of Creation". Rabbi Rietti, showed how all languages stem form Hebrew. He went through some letters and showed how each and every letter in the Aleph- Bet contributed to the meaning of that word. It was a fascinating speech and truly portrayed the uniqueness of Lashon Hakodesh.

Middle States Visitation
|
On March 23, 2009, the Middle States Visitation team arrived
at SKA. They were welcomed at an opening dinner on Monday night and spent the
next two days at the school, visiting classrooms, talking to students and
teachers, parents and administrators and getting the feel of the special SKA
spirit.
On Thursday afternoon, Mr. Heft, the head of the team met
with the administration, the faculty and the parents and affirmed that he would
recommend reaccreditation for SKA. He noted those aspects of the school that the team found most impressive: the high
standards, the commitment to each
individual child and the openness and warmth that was so palpable that he and the team felt that they too had become part of the "SKA family."
We thank the team for validating
our mission and to the many many people....board members, parents and faculty
..... who helped make this happen. A special thanks to the students...you
were wonderful ....and of course, to Mrs. Pomerantz, the head of the planning
committee who really coordinated the whole venture

Mrs. Shari Siman-Tov, the 11th graders and the Chai Lifeline team worked
with Rachel Chaya and Mrs. Shmulewitz on Sunday, march 29th to make Shari's
special dream a reality. The Juniors provided the children with manicures, hair

on Sunday, March 1st. Student representatives from 11th
and 12th grade competed in many challenges and interactive events, some
of which included, cell biology, health science, ecology quizzes, chemistry physics
labs, bridge engineering and solar power contests. Although it may seem like
the last thing anyone would want to do on a Sunday, the girls actually had fun
working together and interacting with students from other schools. All the
participants agreed that it was an exciting and memorable day. Special thanks
to the coach, Mrs. Rosenfeld and Ms. Chambre for accompanying and assisting the
girls.

ideas that helped solve the difficult problems. Thanks to Mrs. Budne, the coach
of the team.

Sophomore Students Teach the Preschool about the Makot
|

The Sophomores teamed up
with the four year old nursery students to teach them about the makot and to
prepare them for the upcoming holiday of Pesach. Each preschooler received a
little basket with toys that represented each of the ten makot. The children,
along with the SKA students loved the program and loved the toys from the
sunglasses representing Choshech to bubble wrap for Shechin. This was a great
way for everyone to get excited for Pesach and have fun at the same time. Special
thanks to Ariella Bodoff and Ahuva Goldstein for making the adorable baskets,
along with the staff at Lev Chana for organizing this event.

Senior Haggada Roundtable
|
On Tuesday, March 31st, the senior class prepared for Pesach with the Haggada Round Table. The gym was set up in small circles of 5-6 girls. Each girl came with her own 1-2 minute D'var Torah on an assigned topic and read her D'var Torah and heard from the other girls at her 'table.' After ten minutes, the girls rotated, encountering different girls with Divrei Torah in different topics than those they just heard. After two periods, each girl hopefully was able to hear about 20 Divrei Torah on different parts of the seder from different girls in the grade. Thanks so much to Mrs. Kobre ands Mrs. Ralbag, the seniors' Grade Level Advisors, for organizing this program. It was a great success!
